On another site this modem/wireless router is extremely poorly rated and almost made me decide not to buy. But those reviews all seem to be wrong, at least so far. (I have only been connected 5 days, and, should note that I am primarily using this over a wired connection and not the wireless.)
First, connection to Comcast could not have been easier. I did not even need to call them. A screen popped up asking me to enter the magic numbers and I was on.
The wireless connection was a little more confusing as the instructions did not make clear the password to use and I needed to go to youtube for videos showing me what to do. Don't even bother with Motorola's website. It is worthless.
The wireless range is sufficient for my uses, probably about 45 feet through a single wall and 35 feet through 2 walls.
This modem is speedy, improving my download speed from 5.73 mbps to 25.50 and upload from 3.31 to 3.84, which is fine for me.
Other reviews indicated you needed to tweek the default firewall setting to turn off "IP Flood Detection", but on mine, that was already correctly set as off as the default so speeds were good from the start.
The combined modem/router is a good idea with fewer wires, no compatibility issues and a single set-up.

I'm on my second one and it too needs to be replaced. The first one had a dead port when I bought it, so I returned it to staples and got a new one. The second one has a weird wireless problem where after 8 hours or so, the wireless will drop out for about 15 minutes. Also, the longer it is on, the higher the ping times to the local address of the modem get.

Configuring one of these is counter intuitive at times. For example, if you want to assign something a DHCP reservation, you have to find the entry in the table of reservations, DELETE the entry, and then add it in a separate table above the reservation table.

I liked the idea of getting a wirelss router, cable modem, and gigabit router all in one since I need all those things and thought it would be a great way to keep things neat and save on electricity, but honestly all the time I have spent trying to troubleshoot this thing has cost way more than powering three separate devices would have. Which brings me to my next point.

So far I have contacted tech support about six times. The first time they had me reboot it and called it a day. Then when I started logging the behavior of it, they said it was the walls of my house. When I said I was on a laptop 10 feet from the modem with nothing in between, they said there must be interference and I should try a different channel and call back. After a day of trying channels, 1, 6, and 11, I called back, and they actually had me try ALL the other channels. I explained that when I dropped back to my old wireless AP I didn't have any problems, but that wasn't good enough for the tech. After having the problem with the other 8 channels, they had me disable WMM and disable wireless n-mode and run it a day.

Each time I called, I think I sat on hold 15 minutes before explaining everything all over again to a new tech. The last time I called in, they had me do a factory reset, and now want me to run it a day.

Changing channels, and other settings in a modem is no problem for me, but I can't recommend this modem to anyone, because how many end users would put up with that kind of stuff?

To add insult to injury, if you do have to get one of these replaced under warrantee, you have to pay $5 for them to cross ship you one AND pay return shipping.

Now that I have had the second one replaced I'm still having the problem where it drops offline. Motorola/Arris says that it must be the buggy firmware the Time Warner is pushing down and I have to call Time Warner and they won't send me another modem.

Good Upgrade from Older Surfboard

Comments about Motorola SBG6580 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem Gateway:

This unit replaced a Surfboard that we had for 5-6 years and only replaced to get the improvements in speed and wifi signal strength. Older unit was excellent in its day and this one is better in every respect while still fitting in the same size casing. There are four cat5 slots in the back, so a separate router may not be needed. This is not the cheapest router modem available, but when you figure in the additional cost of a stand-alone router with a 3.0 level modem, besides the extra space taken up, this is a very good way to go.

Comments about Motorola SBG6580 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem Gateway:

This is not really my primary modem. I did have a modem which connects into a real 1840 Enterasys Router followed by and Cisco ASA and a Symantec SG1660 before entering the Network. Yes the network is secured which caused issues with my xbox360. the xbox360 was on line, however I never had the need to play multiplayer over the internet as co-op plays. Using my network configuration I would had to go backwards to see which device or port is blocking the borderlands co-op play (Netflix, Halo, MW etc worked fine). Shopping at Staples, I saw this great deal and decided to exchange my incoming modem and create a wireless before the DMZ/internal network. Setup was a breeze, the software found the modem, the ports are easy to configure and a quick call to Comcast adding the MAC (well besides some issues with Comcast, entering the wrong MAC)got me online very easy. Configuring the modem was fast and easy, the router as well as the firewalls had no issues passing traffic. The Wireless was configured for the Gaming systems and it was a breeze. Having 3 more RJ45 ports was nice. for testing I added a Meraki Wireless AP in one. the wireless was picked up and accessible right way with full security. Performance is great I didn't drop any connection even after connecting couple Laptops and phones for testing issues, creating 4 more SSID's on the Meraki and the Internal on the Motorola didn't cause any hick-ups or delays, even playing music, watching Netflix, streaming Youtube on various channels simultaneously worked like a charm.

Great 2 in 1 Modem/Router

Comments about Motorola SBG6580 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem Gateway:

I had to replace an outdated 10-year old cable modem and didn't feel like leasing one through my cable company forever, so I decided to get this one. It works great. I connected it to my TWELVE year-old Mac computer, did some configuring, and it works great. I have a faster internet connection and everything that's hooked up wirelessly (my laptop, BluRay player, 4-in-1 printer and tablet) works well with the new modem. It may cost a lot, but remember, you're getting TWO devices in one, and it's well worth it. I eliminated two devices and replaced it with one. I'm glad I got this device!
