I like this hard disk very much. In fact I have 2 of them. One serves as a start up back up disk for my MacBook Pro computer. It can start my computer. I have it directly connected to the MacBook Pro's USB 3 port. The other that I bought recently is connected to a Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock's USB 3 port and I use it for a Time Machine backup. It serves very well for that purpose. The only reason I have given these 4 instead of 5 stars is because there's no other USB 3 ports on it and they do not connect well by a USB 3 hub (though it seems like all Macs have a problem with these hubs). There's also no place for a separate power supply so you are limited in how much you can connect. It forces you to find a way to add ports that work. The only way I could find was a Thunderbolt Dock with USB 3 ports. The reviews say these are slower than normal USB 3 but faster than USB 2. In any case this works fantastic for my purpose. I am reluctant to move the other USB 3 drive that I use for an alternate start up drive over as it is faster plugged directly in. The other direct USB 2 port has a 7 port USB 2 hub and all my older hard disks, a HP printer/scanner/copier, external keyboard and mouse all attached. I also use a vacant port for the Sony camera, MP3 player and occasional smart phone when I need it (one at a time).

The drive is wonderful to look at, seems to work great, super for a Time Machine back up drive, and works well with Carbon Copy Pro which made me a bootable backup that it keeps up to date. It would be 5 stars if there was another USB 3 or even another port as a USB 2 port on back or a Firewire 800 port so it does not create such a problem with the limited USB 3.0 ports on my MacBook Pro (with Mavericks system). Also, I wish there was the option to plug it in externally. The inability of Macs to deal with USB 3.0 hubs is a problem you can't blame this for, though the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock does provide a solution that is faster than USB 2.0 but slower than full USB 3. Currently Thunderbolt Ports are too expensive to wish for as additional choices on a hard disk like this and you need another dock as the Thunderbolt docks seem to count on external devices having additional Thunderbolt ports (something my old monitor does not have). The software included with the WD My Passport works great too. I do not know how it will hold up in the long run again the older Seagate drives that are similar but with changeable module for different ports you can order (those can quit suddenly without warning but work well). Also, I like that the WD My Passport for Mac does go to sleep when the Macintosh turns off or shut down (not sure which) if they are connected to the computer or Thunderbolt dock's USB 3 port. That feature does not work if it is connected to the USB 2 hub, where it was connected the first week or so, until the Belkin Thunderbolt Express dock got here (that is a great way to add up to 3 additional USB 3 devices but not a USB 3 hub). It is powered externally which helps the Macintosh out.

    Sent it back.

WD worked very hard to get this device to work but I had to send it back. Simply wouldn't work.

Comments about WD My Passport for Mac 2TB USB 3.0 Silver:

Great item for the mac user. Two TB of storage more than meets my needs for back-up storage, Plug and play makes this easy to use right out of the box. Compatible with Time Machine was the deal maker. Great price, too.
