After much research I returned my vaio laptop and bought a surface pro. I'm glad I did! The vaio is a good machine but I wanted tablet portability with the specs of an ultrabook. Another factor was seeing the beautiful 1080p screen (with Wacom technology) in the store. Surface pro is fast and can also play the games I tried out at moderate graphics settings. The somewhat negative factors pointed out by critics (weight, battery life) aren't a big deal to me since the device is built and functions so well as a computer. The battery can be set to save more power and after a while the weight is barely noticeable. To make a fully functional and fast tablet device like this some sacrifice needs to be made. So what if it's a slightly heavier tablet? It's still a tablet. Windows 8 takes a couple days to get used to but works great especially with a touch screen. Everything seems to work fine, including the wifi and the stylus pen. I just wish it wasn't so tough to find the type keyboard at a local store. As a digital media major I will be using this hooked up to a monitor through the mini display port (another great feature that works well). Great job Microsoft.

I was excited when this computer came out. I was going to replace my laptop with this. I was going to be fine not having the CD/DVD drive because almost everything can be found online that I would need. One issue I had was that there was only one USB port. This limits the usability of the tablet right away. Another issue I had was that I do a lot of travelling. A lot of hotels do not have WIFI, they only have the hardwire ethernet connection. There is no ethernet port for a hardwire connection. This is supposed to make things better for travelling but it is actually more of an inconvenience. This was also a lot slower than expected.

      Comments about Surface Pro, 64GB:

I've been looking for a tablet that could run the same apps I use at work but in a more portable form factor. This device is very fast and is also very responsive. The pen is also going to be a great asset for note taking in meetings in the office.

          Comments about Surface Pro, 64GB:

I was intrigued to discover last year that Microsoft planned to enter the world of hardware design, and now I'm pleased to find that they've done their homework. I bought the Surface Pro hoping to find a tablet that could run a complete operating system and handle business computing-- as well as all the "consumption" that other tablets are known for. It would appear I've found what I was hoping for.

The screen is super high-res, the included pen was an unexpected surprise for composing emails and reviewing documents, and the separate type cover accessory makes this feel perfectly well suited to lots of typing. It is also very fast thanks to a solid state hard drive and great cpu.

The battery gets about 5 hours of battery life when I use it heavily, and with "power saving options", I get closer to 6-7. Certainly less than a "consumption" tablet, but better than any laptop I've used in recent years. I would hope that future Surface Pro models find a better solution for storing the pen than having it magnetically attach to the charging port.

On another note, I see now that Windows 8 was built with touch screen in mind...It flows so well on the Surface.

This is a great piece of machinery that takes tablets to a more meaningful and useful place.

          Comments about Surface Pro, 64GB:

I love my Surface Pro. I am a middle school teacher, and this thing is now attached to my person at all times.

It is perfect for heading around to school meetings without carrying the clunky school laptops, and has full Windows 8 Pro. This allows me to use any of the district software without issue while still only carrying something a bit bigger than the iPad (which has compatibility issues galore at in our district).

A huge selling point for me was the active digitizer pen, which allows me to draw diagrams with digital ink, and take notes much more effectively. I can even wander the classroom using it as a digital white board when I remote connect to my projector.

Its heavier than an iPad or Samsung tablet, but this is really an ultrabook - and a solidly built one at that. Don't bother comparing it to anything else, because it outclasses any traditional tablet in functionality. Plus, its still plenty light to be portable.

Only down side is the shorter than ideal battery life. 3-5 hrs is still decent for an ultrabook, but mentally I still wish there was more. That said, it charges quickly and rumors are that Microsoft will be coming out with battery extending accessories similar to the docking keyboard for the Asus Vivotab. The only time you should expect significantly less than 4hrs is if you are doing something more intensive than office or basic web browsing.

Full ultrabook in a convertible tablet form factor... Perfect for me!

          Comments about Surface Pro, 64GB:

I bought the Surface Pro with considerable reservations. I truly expected that I would be taking it back after a week or two. But at the end of the 2 week return time I could not imagine myself without it. It truly serves as that much needed combination of a tablet and computer. I bought it thinking I would replace my laptop with it. What I have found is that it has nearly replaced my tablet as well. I have an android tablet which I frequently compare to the ipad I bought my wife. I have constantly found that I can do things with my android tablet that my wife cannot do with her ipad. And now, well, I find myself using the Surface Pro most of the time. One of the most positive features is the keyboard which was made for the device and not an aftermarket add-on. I have the regular typing keyboard and love it. The regular sized USB port is tremendously useful. And the ability to go between apps and the desktop gives me the ability to always be able to accomplish the task I want. The fact that I can use regular programs like Office is awesome. I use the surface pro for both home and work and find it gives me the portability of a tablet and the functionality of laptop in one machine. The only addition I would make is to add GPS to it.

Is Surface RT or Surface Pro compatible with epub files like those for e books? I know a Kindle fire is not. Certain devices only utilize the files that the manufacturer has a vested intrest in.

            • A:

The quick answer is yes, both can read EPUB ebooks, but there are some "gotchas." Surface Pro runs Windows 8 Pro, which includes full legacy support for existing desktop applications. So, with Surface Pro you can continue to run your favorite EPUB eBook software. The Surface RT utilizes a different processor and it runs Windows RT. Windows RT only supports the modern Windows application framework. With Windows RT, you must run apps installed from the Windows App Store. A search of the Windows 8 Store for Apps finds BookReader, EpubReader, and Freda. You would want to verify whether your eBooks include DRM since these do not support protected eBook formats. I would expect things to get better, but for the moment I would suggest you consider the Surface Pro instead.

The Surface pro does not have an HDMI or a micro HDMI port. However, with an adapter you may use the display port for many different options, including HDMI.
