I bought a different one a few years back and really didn't like it. This one the height is good for me. its soft and comfortable on my lap. I don't mind it at all and it seems really quiet to me

The Chill Mat is a lifesaver! I usually leave my 17" MacBook Pro in my (home) office except during presentations or meetings. However, recent foot surgery has me working from a recliner to keep my foot elevated. I can literally work comfortably for hours. The fan is very effective and so quiet that I forget it's on. The sleek design in white satisfies my Apple aesthetic and perfectly fits my MacBook Pro. The only negative, mentioned by other reviewers, it that the rubber retention pads aren't sufficient to keep the laptop from sliding. I've partially solved that by using the Chill Mat backwards to adjust the incline and that's easy enough. Even after I'm mobile again, the Chill Mat will be a permanent accessory because it truly makes my MacBook Pro - finally - a LAP-top!

I had problems with my laptop shutting down when I used it for several hours because it overheated. This was more prone to happen when I had the laptop on my lap (where my leg blocked the ventilation fan) but also occasionally when I was using it on my desk. I found that this is chill mat prevents the heat buildup.
