I'm a college Chemistry professor, my students have to take a national exam that doesn't allow programmable calculators. The TI30XA is the answer. It does everything they need it to do and easily, plus it's far more durable than their TI83s. It's also less expensive and it is easier to use. Students sometimes complain about the 30XA when the are so use to their 83 but once the realize they don't have to delve through layers of menus to do common things they stop complaining and become fans.

This model is not TIs best. The buttons are a little to close together, which makes quick computations difficult. Plus the battery eventually wears out and needs to be replaced which is difficlut. It also does not have a two-line screen to confirm that you typed in the correct sequence. I would suggest upgrading to the TI-30X IIS which has the added feature of a two-line screen and solar power and more space on the keypad.

Comments about Texas Instruments® TI-30Xa Scientific Calculator:

I love this calculator. I had a prior one that lasted for over 5 years and the display finally gave out. Although there are smaller calculators or ones with more function, I bought the exact same model because it's so reliable. It does the basics well, with decent display (I don't have to put on my reading glasses to see it), but if you need slightly more advanced functions they are available. Don't know if it will work for an engineer, but will be good enough for at least basic college-level math.
Tough construction- my kids have dropped this many times and it kept working. Hope the replacement is just the same!

I bought this calculator for my son to use in his math classes. He is currently in Algebra I, 7th grade, and I was trying to buy him a calculator that was easy to use. I hve always used texas instrument products throughout my educational career (Currently hold EdD in mathematics), and I bought the first texas instrument calculator for my son's mathematical journey. Love the product!!!

Carefully read the instruction manual that came with the calculator and follow the examples. This model works only with numerical values. It will not do algebra problems with unknown variables, e.g., X, Y, Z, etc.

Find the parentheses buttons. Type in the portion of the problem in parentheses, then type the rest of the problem. Repeat for multiple parentheses.

This calculator takes two A76 batteries.
They are already inside, but you need to remove the backing (attached by tiny screws) to replace them. The batteries last for a couple years (enough to get the average kid through middle school before buying a Graphing Calculator for high school).

TI-30Xa is NOT solar powered, unless the model name includes the word "solar". That is a different model number.

The two batteries required by this, as documented by TI, are A-76 type 1.5 volt "button batteries".

It happens that a vast number of small 1.5 volt batteries will work in the calculator, as long as they are small enough to fit in the holder and are 1.5 volt type. Find the cheapest ones you can that fit, and they will work for a very long time.

Replacing the batteries requires a small philips head screwdriver.
