Our school required the TI-83 for some high school math classes. However, during back to school season, the TI-84 Plus Silver was discounted to the same price. Because of the extra features (including SAT prep, extra memory, and even games), it was a smart buy. However, the teachers were on to the extra features pretty quickly - the Chem teacher wouldn't let the kids use it during tests. Also, I thought the display on this was not as clear as the display on the TI-83

I haven't had luck with TI calculators. The last time I bought one was almost 26 years ago.

The main reason for buying a TI calculator, as opposed to an HP, is because a variant of this (the TI 84+ school edition) is currently used in my child's math classroom.

The overriding reason for buying the TI 84+ Silver calculator was because I fell for the marketing spiel: faster processor and more memory capacity. It feels nice, even if expensive, to be on the bleeding edge....

The other attractive features are the "purported" ability to do more physical chemistry and biology related calculations "with ease*. Albeit, we haven't used it for either purposes.

The 84+ Silver is certainly an overkill (like taking a sledgehammer to put a nail thru the drywall), but I'm hoping that 75-85% of its capabilities will be eventually exploited. A nice benefit is that it came with the PC (and also a calc-to-calc) i/f cable which I hope will make programming it easier.

The only downside is that the look and feel (keys/buttons) is extremely cheap and chintzy, resp. I highly recommend HP if you are into calculators that feel solid with extremely good tactile feedback - I own an old 48GX and it still feels great to the touch.
