Serious problems w Canvio Slim II 1TB

By NYC Tech

from New York

Comments about Toshiba Canvio® Slim II 1TB Portable USB 3.0 External Hard Drive For PC (Silver):

With Canvio Slim II, Toshiba has some very serious problems. While it is very attractive and conveniently sized, it has problems being transferred from one computer to another, and it has problems accurately copying files.

The password problem was totally dumb. The password software is on the external harddrive. The minute you set it up on the first host computer, the external hard drive becomes totally unreadable by any other computer. That is because the password software is on the password protected external harddrive that is ot readable when plugged into any other computer until the unreadable program is activated.

Duh! This has never happened with any other password protected external hard drive I have purchased.

Toshiba will not tell you what the work-around is. But it is to copy the password protection software off that peripheral while the peripheral is still plugged into the first computer. Then transfer that software onto any subsequent hosting computers before attempting to transfer the external hard drive itself.

The most dangerious part of this is what Toshiba will tell you to do. What Toshiba advises is 1) assigning the unreadable peripheral a new partition letter, which is impossible when the computer can't read the peripheral at all; and/or 2) reinstalling USB drivers; and/or 3) reformatting the peripheral and destroying lossing all the data on it, including perhaps the password manager software itself.

Even more seriously, when I copied 4 G files from the computer to the Canvio Slim II, error messages were frequently returned advising that the target folder on the Canvio Slim II could not be found. I would hit OK, and then the next file would be successfully copied. Then the error would occur again with a third file. Something interfers with successful copying and it appears to be inadequete power, based on what I read on non-Toshiba forums

Although the product's external wrapping claims one can get information on optional power cables for Canvio slim II on Toshiba's website, I couldn't find it.

So the product fails to copy reliably. Toshiba doesn't provide timely tech advice. When it does, the advice is incorrect, wrong and even destructive (as with "reformatting"). I have never run in to any of these problems with my WD or Seagate external drives.

Great slim portable drive from Toshiba!!

Comments about Toshiba Canvio® Slim II 1TB Portable USB 3.0 External Hard Drive For PC (Silver):

Very impressed and pleased with this new Canvio Slim II from a great manufacturer, like Toshiba!!Very nice compact size - just slightly larger than a deck of cards, with a nice-looking brushed aluminum case. The drive has plenty of space (1TB) and with USB 3.0 is fast and super easy to do back-ups on. I plugged it into the USB port and Win7 Plug & Play recognized it and then set-it up in just a few minutes. After that, I went into Windows Back-Up and Restore in Control Panel to set-up the back-up schedule, etc. The initial back-up on my HP laptop took about 1 hr. and now, about 1/2 hr. each time I do my weekly back-up. I didn't use any of the installed software that came with the drive yet, so I can't comment on that at this time. There are basic instructions that come with the drive if you want to use the Toshiba software, but I don't really think you have to; as Windows Back-Up is very simple and works just fine on its own. There is also enough space on this 1TB drive to backup at least 5-6 computers, so you can use this as a "whole-family" and smartphone back-up device as well; making it a great choice to protect yourself at a great, affordable price. Overall very very pleased so far with the drive after using it over the passed month. Got a great deal here at Staples.com when I caught it on a special for about sixty-four clams, including tax and free shipping. I still think it's a great value at this price point, regardless of where you buy it, as Toshiba normally has great, reliable and quality products for a reasonable, affordable prices. Enjoy Life!!
