This laptop is frequently used as a "footballed" promotional item and is sold at savings of from one to two hundred dollars off list when put "on sale." That includes seller's "dollars off" coupons and manufacturer's rebates. I purchased mine for less than $350 (delivered, including sales taxes) after applying a seller's onsite coupon to an already-reduced sale price plus a $50 rebate from Toshiba.

First, the Pros:
The six-core AMD CPU is reasonably fast for a processor with only a 1.5 GHz clock speed (the L75D-A7280 model boasts a 2 GHz processor but at a higher price). The Radeon Graphics chip provides satisfactory performance for online video streaming including Hulu Plus and Youtube (I didn't try Netflix or games) over a decent broadband connection. Six megs of memory is adequate for most tasks but if you are a heavy user of advanced features of graphics applications such as Photoshop and video editing software (or plan to use it as a true desktop replacement), upgrading the RAM to 16 GB may be a desirable option. The Fusion finish on the case is quite attractive and the AC power adapter is of reasonable size; it does not overheat or get too hot with extended use as is the case with some AC adapters. The raised keys on the keyboard provide adequate sensitivity and touch so I have no complaints in that department. The screen resolution and brightness are also very satisfactory as is the DTS audio.

Next, the Cons:
For the approximately $350 (delivered) that I paid for this laptop, I didn't have high expectations for any budget or value-priced laptop. However, I found the Toshiba Multi-Touch touchpad to be less precise and responsive than I had expected. I am confident that with more practice, this situation might improve but straight out-of-the-box, Multi-Touch was a disappointment and I found it easier to just add a mouse that has since been replaced with a Logitech Wireless Touchpad which is well-suited for Windows 8 navigation. I had originally intended to downgrade the O/S to Windows 7 but despite repeated tries (holding down the [F12] key), it would not recognize and boot from a Windows 7 Setup disc. I even set the optical drive as the priority boot device and still no joy. To rule out problems with my Setup disc, I tested it on no less than four other PCs/laptops and all booted from the disc without problems. The Toshiba did boot from the set of Recovery Discs that were physically created on the laptop, however, suggesting that I might have success if I were to burn a copy of the Setup disc using the laptop's own DVD burner (i.e., to rule out possible head alignment tolerances in the laptop's DVD drive).

One of the most controversial things about Windows 8 is the absence of the Start button and Start Menu. I don't know if you can fairly label this as a "Con" or negative attribute but millions of users have relied on the Start Menu through previous generations of Windows. These users became confused and less productive when it was omitted in Windows 8. For far too many, trying to discover and relearn where everything is became an all too frequent, time-consuming, counter-productive, and frustrating experience. Despite Microsoft's claims to the contrary, the new Windows 8 Start Shell/Screen, dominated by large tiles, is less intuitive to many users who need to locate familiar tools and apps that are NOT shown or included in the tiles of the opening Start Shell/Screen.

It didn't take long for software developers to jump in and begin turning out programs that restore the Start menu and take you to the Desktop at initial system startup. There are now a relatively large number of Start Menu replacement programs available, many of them completely free and available for download online. The following is a list (listed in alphabetical order and not necessarily by my own preference) of most – but not all – of them (new ones will undoubtedly become available with the passage of time):
Classic Shell, Ezy Start Menu for Windows 8, Free Windows 8 Start Menu, Pokki, Power8, RetroUI Pro, Revel BringBack, Start8 (commercial but tends to include adware), StartIsBack (commercial but only costs $3 after 30-day trial), StartMenu8, StartW8, Start Menu X, ViStart, Win8 Start Button, Windows 8 Start Button.

I tried quite a few and all have merits and demerits. The two freebies that I like best are Classic Shell and RetroUI Pro. Classic Shell will provide sufficient functionality for most users and is certainly among the easiest to use (familiar interface with little or no learning curve required). RetroUI Pro is more "advanced" and modernizes the user interface combining the old with the new. It is a much more modern approach to a Windows 8 Start Menu and is far more intuitive than the native Start Screen that is the default of Win 8. In fact, I personally feel that something similar to RetroUI should have been included as an integral part of Windows 8 since it is reasonably tablet-friendly which was the motivating factor for developing Win8 in the first place.

If you want to just restore Start Menu functionality to Windows 8, go with Classic Shell and explore other alternatives only when you have plenty of spare time to experiment. If you want an enhanced experience with a relatively intuitive interface, you may want to try RetroUI Pro instead. If you prefer to experiment on your own, I would uninstall any of these apps that push unrelated companion apps, adware or third party-apps into the default installation.

Microsoft will be re-incorporating some type of Start Menu functionality in its SP1 release slated for October, 2013. However, that effort is likely to be much too conservative and fall short of the mark so keep the above list handy.

Would I recommend this laptop to my friends and relatives? Absolutely, provided that they can get it while it is on sale and not have to pay the full list price.

Replacement for Dell desktop. On setup had myriad difficulties in connecting to HughesNet and Canon printer. Worked numerous solutions, none of which were viable. Called Tech Support and spoke with three reps in India. Was told that for a one time $70.00 fee (I had the laptop for less then ten days) or a 1 year fee of approx. $160. they could mate the laptop with the 18mth old Canon printer. Was told that they were the only ones who could perform internal changes to the laptop so as to make the printer work. I passed. Called Canon and was professionally guided to the Windows 8 driver download. Did same and all works fine. Called back and spoke with a supervisor. Referenced the level of Canon support, my previous experiences with Canon, Dell and Apple as to similar support, and was told "We aren't Dell, Canon or Apple". I requested a supervisor and was patched through to a US representative. Heard the same nonsense. Asked for a mailing address re: customer support and was told "You can find that on-line". I will never deal with Toshiba again, nor will I ever purchase another Toshiba product. Their objective is to put their hand in your pocket. Absolutely UNSAT. As to the quality and performance of the laptop, still in the "acquaintance phase". Do not like the key or mouse pad response. Have tried to adjust w/out success. In hindsight, would NOT have purchased this device were I aware of their attitude and condescending, patronizing approach to customer service. On a scale of 10, I'll give Toshiba a ZERO.

nice price, battery, touchpad lousy

Comments about Toshiba L75D-A7283 17.3" Laptop:

Good value with excellent battery life at 5.5 true hours. But touchpad is awful. It takes serious pressure to tap or click to get it to register. It is almost a dealbreaker it is so bad. The keyboard is great though aand no flex. Very sturdy. Case also is light but sturdy. I really dont like glossy screens but it is near impossible to find laptops without gloss. Manufacturers do that to conceal flaws and the reflection is very bad for your eyes and distracting. Windows 8.1 is awful. The new versions of office run slower and don't anything to take advantage of Win 8. But this laptop is ok enough. I would purchase again at this price point.

Not Impressed

Comments about Toshiba L75D-A7283 17.3" Laptop:

This is the first Toshiba computer I've ever owned and I am not a fan. I purchase it while on sale and was under the impression that Toshibas were great computers. For starters, this system has Windows 8 which is a downfall on any system. Also, I have issues with this computer not loading windows on startup, and sometimes it doesn't like to shut down. I've had it freeze up on me, and it is slow to open apps and browsers (I'm sitting right next to our router). The most annoying thing on this computer is the mouse pad, it doesn't scroll well, nor does it stay off when you shut it off, making it very hard to type. My palms hit the pad and it knocks my cursor out of my typing field. I shut it off, and my palm hits it and turns it back on. Just annoying.

Comments about Toshiba L75D-A7283 17.3" Laptop:

A 17.3" Laptop is a big thing. It's heavy. Has a beautiful screen. Yes, I watch movies on it. Surfing the net takes on new meaning when it is bigger. The hardest thing is the 8.1 system. 8.1 is different then XP. It is not a bad different. It is a wonderful different. Metro, at first a puzzle. Then Metro becomes your best friend. Never has so many things on a computer been so close to your fingertips. The little start icon helped more then they will admit. Before I forget to say it. The machine it's self is beautiful. I would give the advice to any one. Toshiba. 8.1 and enjoy your life!!!
