This was my granddaughter's Birthday present and she loves it. She is in college and uses it for research. preparing papers and making powerpont presentations. The Toshiba laptop is the right size and is fast. She says it is so easy to use and she can carry it in her back pack with her papers and books. She can take it anywhere she needs to have it to work on her projects. It not only looks nice but is very efficient and is large enough to be easy to use but not so large that it is buldy to carry around.

I bought this computer on Black Friday from Staples.com. This was my first (and probably last) purchase from Staples.com.

First, I had to repeatedly ask questions to the Staples Facebook group about basic information about my purchase, like a tracking number from UPS and if the item had actually been shipped since this website refuses to give those updates for who knows what reason. Why would people want to know the status of their orders? I received the laptop a day after it was suppose to arrive. I do not know if that was a Staples issue or a UPS issue.

When it did arrive the Laptop was put inside an oversized box with no protection what so ever. God only knows how much it got banged up inside a UPS truck for who knows how long. The Laptop was extremely cold, so cold that I had to wait 2 hours for it to get to a decent temperature to even attempt powering it up. Then the real problems began.

As I unpackaged the laptop I noticed he CD drive was a little flimsy. It was not as bad as a previous Laptop. That didn't bother me that much though because Toshiba is known for that, but one would think they would have fixed that since 2009. I powered it up and did all the basic stuff like move files over from my external hard drive and download updates. About 2 hours later, I can hear this weird clicking noise. I thought it was just noise from the television show I was watching and didn't think anything of it till. Around 30 minutes later I turn the TV off and I am still hearing the clicking sound. I put my ear to the Laptop and sure enough it's the hard drive. Toshiba used a very cheap Hitachi hard drive that had a ton of negative user reviews.

I decided to take the computer to my local Staples store and try to exchange it for another, but Staples said they can not exchange it for the same computer because it was a "sale" computer. I am mad that I could not be offered something with the same specs as a refund for the same price, but since I thought I was being smart and buying on Black Friday I am out of luck. It is there company policy so buyers beware when buying sale items.

One positive from this experience is the employee at my local Staples. She did a great job of helping me throughout this experience. She was very nice and very understanding of my frustrations. She did a great job of answering my questions. The same can be same about the people that operate the Facebook Group.

I am thankful I did not have to deal with Toshiba themselves because they have some of the poorest customer service of any company I have ever had to deal with.

I am officially done with all Toshiba products. Please, don't waste your money on them no matter how good the deal is. It is to good to be true. I am probably done with Staples as well.

Comments about Toshiba L955-S5370 15.6" Laptop:

I bought this to replace a 4 year old HP Pavillion Dual Core that I use about 10 hours a day to run my Internet business.
The HP still ran, so I wanted to replace with the i5 version of the same, but couldn't pass up this deal.
So far, it is obviously much faster, though getting used to Windows 8 has slowed me a little.
It is also much quieter than my old HP.
I usually use an external keyboard and mouse, but have mostly used this with the keyboard it came with so far, and it has been very accurate and easy to use despite one of the other reviews I think I read here.
I run an old version of Adobe Illustrator (CS), which is amazingly fast and actually surprised me that it was compatible.
Other than that, I have about 10 Internet tabs open, and Word and Excel. Oh, and an FTP program.
          It's very quick.
The DVD drive seemed a little flimsy/hard to open, but once I found the spring loaded button it popped right open.
And, it's much lighter than my old laptop even though it has a larger screen.

A little nervous when it arrived... shipped via UPS in the Toshiba-marked box that you would get in the store - no external packaging or cushioning, but it didn't appear damaged.

Comments about Toshiba L955-S5370 15.6" Laptop:

This is a great laptop at a great price. The only two issues I have had after three weeks is with the keyboard and the trackpad. The keys on the keyboard are difficult to press correctly. You have to press them right on the center otherwise it may not register your input. I think this could have been designed better. The other issue is the trackpad. I have had just a few instances when you go to use it and it does not always register your input. This has not been an issue for me because I use an external mouse.

With those being said, I have not had any other issues. With the i5 processor and Windows 8, this is a great value. The keyboard and track[ad just take some getting used to. The sound quality and volume is good, the number and type of ports is very nice, the design is great looking and unique, and I've found from experience that Toshiba products perform very well. The battery life is about 4-5 hours I think depending on use, which is decent/good. Really, no complaints and I would recommend this to a friend. All new pieces of technology take some getting used to and this is no exception (and Windows 8, for that matter, takes some getting used to. Windows 8 is really great. There are some features on here like being able to have two apps open/running side by side, the swipe features (left, right, down, two fingers, three fingers) that work on the trackpad as well as on a touchscreen if you have one, and the whole interface that I wonder now how I lived without. Nicely done, Windows and Toshiba.

Comments about Toshiba L955-S5370 15.6" Laptop:

Excellent price point for an i5 laptop. Lightweight, and battery life in most applications is pretty good. The laptop does not get hot even under significant load. The standard RAM and hard drive size are good for most applications. I personally use the machine for RF and analog circuit design and other engineering functions like signal processing. And of course the odd presentation and demo movie. The screen resolution is good, although the screen is susceptable to glare and reflections. Excellent machine/value for college students. I am not a fan of Windows 8, (too many extra keystrokes required and it is really set up for tablets) but the Windows 7 side of the OS is fine. I am also not a fan of the Norton Demo stuff, and recommend uninstalling (with their tool) fairly early.

I am skeptical about Windows 8. I would like to get this laptop, or another similar one, with Windows 7 instead. Does anyone have an opinion on this issue, preferrably from personal experience. Thank you

The main thing to consider before upgrading to Windows 8 is software compatibility. It is possible to downgrade to Windows 7 if you find you do not like Windows 8.

It is specialized memory that works in conjunction with the l1 and l2 CPU cache to improve the computers performance by reducing the time it takes to access memory.
