Q:
Does it cost anything to e-file a state tax return using TurboTax? In this Q & A, on 1/11, Cindy from Staples wrote, "According to Turbo Tax Specialists the IRS and states do not charge for efiling (electronically filing)." But on 1/14, Community Answer from None wrote "There is a charge to efile a state return (not to print a paper form) and the charge varies depending the state and type of return. You are quoted the cost after your state return has been completed. If you efile the state return you pay the filing fee online." Which is the correct answer?

  The Federal and state government themselves do not charge a filing fee in conjunction with the program. The company that processes the return from the program can charge a fee according to individual state law. Most states allow a calculated filing fee, but it is not the state charging it. It is the processing company's charge for transmitting the program output as the particular state's computer readable format. So, both answers are correct.

  With TurboTax Deluxe, you can e-file Federal Tax returns for up to five people, as this is the maximum allowed by the IRS for non-commercial filers. You are only licensed to install the software on a single computer.
