Good Value With Some Compromises

First things first: the magnifier feature on the lamp head is ingenious in design and works great. If you occasionally find yourself squinting at teeny-tiny printed material, or if you run into difficulty threading a needle or doing other fine work, this lamp is for you. In addition, the lamp was very inexpensively priced at Staples. On the down side, the lamp head and head swivel are plastic, not metal, and the entire unit is not nearly as solidly built as more expensive units. However, the unit stands tall and adjusts well. The 13 watt CFL bulb included with the lamp (its maximum rating) provides only moderate illumination. Think of this lamp as a supplemental task light to be used along with another light source (i.e., overhead lighting). Don't buy it for a dimly-lit cave or a heavy-use environment. All in all, a unique product for the value shopper.

Very Good Lamp, but

I work with stained glass and other hobbies. The lighting and magnification of this lamp is great for me. The articulated arm works well. I use a Sylvania 13w-120v-60hz Fluorescent MiniTwist bulb and it provides very good lighting. I've only had this lamp 2 weeks and the plastic clamp has broken. Reading other reviews, I now realize this appears to be a weak point of the lamp. I am returning it today for an exchange because I still like it. I'll review the results of my new lamp after using it for a few weeks. Parts of the lamp are light weight and a little flimsy, but in the way I use the lamp it doesn't affect me. And, where can you buy a lamp like this for the price? I haven't seen any with these features at this low price. I would have rated it higher if the clamp had not have broken after two weeks.

Magnifier is small & of poor quality. Movement of the head is difficult because the tension knobs/screws small & cheap. I'll find another product that is larger & better built.

I thought this product would help me with my detailed scrapbooking. Unfortunately the bracket for mounting the lamp was shotty and does not hold well, along with the springs for tension to hold the lamp in place. The product left a lot to be desired. The light does not have enough brightness to suffeciently illuminate your work.

Purchased this lamp as a returned item for a couple of bucks discount. No instructions, but managed to get it together and functioning. Needs brighter illumination, but a brighter florescent won't fit. Because of the lamp's flimsy construction, I don't have much confidence in it's longevity.

  On the unit’s box it is detailed that the thickness it can clamp on to a desk 1 3/4 " & how deep into the table top it can clamp is less that 1.5".

Q:
I have that lamp from Staples from last year, but never received word about how to fix it in place from the bottom. I don't mean the vice clamp to which it grips the desk, I mean from the part that inserts into the base and can swivel in any direction. There should be a stopper from letting it rotate out of control or even fall out, but I never saw any parts for it and still deal with it.

  My lamp stays right where I put it and never leaves for a coffee break unless I hook it to the coffee table. As you know, it can be mounted horizontal or vertically depending on your preference, but I don't see why you can't drill a hole through the base where it swivels and run a cotter pin or a small bolt through to keep it from moving. I hope you can visualize what I am saying. Let me know if you need a better explanation.
