I had a Samsung digital camera, that I liked very much, however the CD-Rom that you had to run to download the photos, had broken in half. I was at Staples and was looking at digital cameras, as I was ready to replace the whole camera. [...] When I got it home and opened the package, I said, "Oh no"! It had no instructions. I am not familiar with all the new electronic do-dads. Well in less than 5 minutes I had it hooked up, and was downloading my photos. It not only was very reasonable in price, it served the purpose perfectly, and was quite easy to use.

The product is cheaply made and started to fall apart after only 2 months of using it once a day. The screw backed itself out. The product cracked one of my SD cards. After tightening the screw, it became unreliable and would give me a hard time with any SD card I had. Worth spending an extra $15 because you will have to sooner than later.

          Comments about Vivitar RW-50 50-in-1 Card Reader/Writer:

When I had to retire my HP printer, I lost the
capability of downloading the pictures from my old camera into my
computer. For some reason, I couldn't get my camera's software
disc to perform correctly. I've been using this camera since 2002.
Even though I have use of more sophisticated cameras capable of
producing pictures with many more pixels, I am used to my old HP
Photosmart318 and didn't want to learn any new cameras. After
thinking about it for awhile, I decided to try and find an
inexpensive card reader. I bought and installed the Vivitar and
things couldn't have been easier. Not only will it download
pictures from my CF card, it will also handle other types of cards.
I'm glad I found the Vivitar

          Comments about Vivitar RW-50 50-in-1 Card Reader/Writer:

I have six other card readers where each one fails at least one type of memory card. As a fashion photographer I was on location and needed one that would allow quick use on all cards our various cameras use. I ran to Staples and found this one that surpasses all the others. Excellent quality.

For the Vivitar RW-50 50-in-1 Card Reader/Writer, the manufacture Vivitar (800) 592-9541 stats that this unit is Mac & PC compatible.
              For trouble shooting for downloading the software & connecti8ng the unit, I was advised from the manufacture Vivitar;
Try using a different USB connection,
Please check the memory card you are using, and note that a 8 GB memory card is the max allowance.
              Please re-start the PC
Please try a different memory card which is less than 2 or 4 GB of storage capacity.
This is listed as an easy plug & play installation & you should not have to worry about the software.
Please also feel free to call 1-800-MY-APPLE to talk with the manufacture directly on your MAC Mini.

I plugged this into a USB port on my Win XP laptop (WinXP Professional, SP3 level), and plugged in a new SDHC 4 GB card. My system shows a "drive G" that is new, but there is nothing in the window showing the pictures I have on the card.

I checked in Microsoft support, and tried to install a hotfix from 2006 for this problem, but the install process says I have no need to install the fix at my SP level.

            Can anyone help?

              A:

First, double check to make sure there actually are photos on the SD card as opposed to the camera’s internal memory. Typically if when you click the removable disk drive that comes up when you insert your memory card, and you see a blank window, it would indicate that there are no contents on your card. You might also want to try using another memory card to confirm your results.

Hal here again -- solved the problem in a weird way.

It turned out that my HP all-in-one printer had to be unplugged from the system for the computer to recognize and properly handle the SD card reader and of course the SD card. I also had problems with the system recognizing my Nikon S70 camera when plugged directly into the USB port as long as the printer was also plugged in.

Yes, weird, but the printer also has a multiple memory card reader built in, and somehow that interfered with recognizing and handling anything else.

When I want to use the new SD card, either in the card reader, or while in the camera, I simply unplug the printer first, then boot up, and do what I need to do.

In answer to the first part of your question, any USB device you plug in will automatically give the new drive letter. If your machine is recognizing a new drive, then the card must be good. The only thing that I can think of, did you use the card in a camera that did not recognize the newer larger card/or is the card a new "HC" style faster card??

Go into MY COMPUTER and click on the drive letter. It will work just like a floppy disc. You can drag and drop, or save to, or open from the drive letter.

Yes, it works fine! There's nothing about this product that precludes it from working with any modern PC - from Windows 2000 to Windows 7 or any flavor of Mac OS 9.x something. Whether your camera's included software works is another matter, however.

What is the purpose of the USB cable that comes with this card reader? One end is a regular USB plug, the other end has a "receiver" (i.e. fits a USB plug). The packaging & manufacturer website does not reference this cable. Neither does the Staples product description.

Sometimes the footprint of the reader is too big to use in laptops with another item plugged into the other usb port. So this allows the user to use both usb ports at the same time. You can also use the cable as an extension with any usb cable.

Think of it as an extension cord...based on configuration, not everyone can plug the reader directly into their PC or notebook computer. You plug the reader into the cable, and then plug the cable into your USB port. I thought it was obvious.
