I wasn't able to decide on the cheaper Vivitar tripod and the heavy duty. I must say the only thing that was weighing my decision was the cost. The cost is only $5-$10 more for the heavy duty one! I thought about my camera, Canon Rebel SLR and the cost of it...I would hate for the cheaper tri pod to flip over because I went the "cheap" route! This heavy duty tripod has stakes at the bottom and is made to last!! GET IT!

I needed a tripod on an emergency basis for a project. Staples was the only store around (I love that stores are always right where you need one!) and they had two tripods - this and a cheaper Vivitar. There were no samples out and the box was sealed. I figured that the tripod ought to be at least 'good enough' for the price (under $40). All the gears are plastic. If you tighten a knob too much or turn the crank too far you'll mangle the gear and break the thing.

The mechanisms are also full of burrs so that if you try and smoothly pan or tilt, you'll get jumps as you bump into the burrs. It gets better as you work it back and forth further suggesting the softness of the critical sections of the tripod.

The device I wanted to hold was only a simple voice recorder but I wouldn't trust this with a camera I care about.

This product was a cheaper alternative to buying a used professional tripod with a swivel head. So far, so good.

Easy except for screwing the camera on and off - the little button that sticks up gets caught. Also the screw that holds the quick release fell out the first time and was difficult to figure out. After all that, it did do the job.
