Use with my JVC camcorder. Primary use is setup-tape-stop. I like the compact size & light weight. Tracking is smooth when I move the camera to follow action. But, I only do casual shooting, so I'm not sure if this tripod would meet a serious photo-/video-grapher's needs.

For the right size camera this would be a good product. I just bought a Nikon D5000 DSLR and was looking for a compact, lightweight tri-pod for when I go on a cruise this summer and for everyday use. This tripod works well with my much smaller point and shoot however the locking mechanism of the legs is sometimes hard to get to stick and then when you are ready to pack it up it is hard to get it to release. The last couple sections of the legs are very thing and that leads to bending which leads to less stability. I have not yet put my D5000 on it to see how it holds up and I am not sure that i will risk it. For smaller, lighter cameras it serves it's function but I will most likely save my pennies and buy a higher quality tripod.

Comments about Vivitar VT-41 8 Section Tripod, Silver:

I got this "free" with rebate when I purchased a camera -- and to tell you how bad it is I returned it for a refund rather than applying for the rebate and trashing it. I guess this might work OK with the lightest of point-and-shoot digital cameras (the kind you rarely need a tripod for). But I found this tripod to be flimsy, unstable, and frankly a danger to any camera attached to it. Also: The picture on the Web page is a bit misleading -- it shows only the top section the legs unextended. Once extended the things are about the diameter of a car radio antenna. I have another collapsible tripod that cost me a few more $$$ -- but it was obviously money well spent and I'll stick with the old one.
