This phone system replaces an older version made by VTech which saw better days.

Every VTech phone system I have purchased has not given me one problem, so I would say the brand is extremely reliable.

Also, having an ergonomic-style handset, the phone system doesn't slip out of my hand easily.

I also like the fact that I can program the voice mail for remote listening. I'll never miss a message!

Overall, the price versus quality is balanced and if I have to purchase another product like this for my other office, then I'll be sure to pick a VTech phone system!

This phone is the two handset package, and is also available with three or four handsets. It is a DECT-6 phone operating on 1.9GHz, so it will not interact with WiFi networks.

It looks sleek, relatively slim black/silver, good first impression.

It also boasts all the featues you are ever likely to need - selectable ringtones (very limited selections), voicemail, remote access to voiemail, intercom... I could go on but I'd get bored and you can see the full list in the product description. Suffice it to say that on paper it's a full-featured domestic cordless phoe.

Setup was easy - plug in battery pack (I prefer individual batteries but almost no cordless phones use them), charge, and connect the base to the telephone network. If you've ever set up a phone before it's much the same.

First call I misdialed. The beeps are feeble and somewhat delayed - so when you press a digit nothing happens and just as you're about to press the next digit it gives a feeble beep as if the battery only just has enough power to make the beep work. This is off-putting. Fast dialing requires you to deliberately ignore the beeps and just press the buttons anyway (not too difficult with practice and determination). The alternative is to wait for each beep before pressing the next digit. It feels uncoomfortably slow but it works and you will get the number finished before your coffee gets cold. Honest.

The next problem is the display - the backlight is very dim and I find it almost impossible to read. It's much easier to read in bright light or with a flashlight.. or in complete darkness when the backlight is just enough. I searched the menus and could find nothing to adjust the display brightness or contrast.

Third problem is the sound quality. The sound is acceptable if it's loud enough, but behind the sound is a gritty hiss. Between sounds, the squelch circuit mutes the hiss but during speech (or other extraneous noises) this hiss is definitely noticeable. Strangely, the quieter the actual signal is, the louder the hiss (think small gravel in a cement mixer) becomes so if you have a weak connection, this hiss can almost drown the speech. In extreme cases, this becomes a virtually continuous hiss with the middle of each word popping up... sometimes but not always intelligible, but always really unpleasant to listen to.

I have voicemail with my phone company so i have not tested that feature. But however good it is, this phone has enough problems that I can't recommend it.

Comments about Vtech CS6729-2 2 Handset Cordless Telephone with Answering System/Caller ID/Call Waiting:

I also bought this phone for my aunt in assisted living. It was great for her because dialing the phone is difficult for her. We programmed in the numbers on speed dial for her and now it is much easier for her to call me or other family members without having to remember the numbers. I made her a list of the numbers on speed dial with their respective number and all she has to do is pick us the phone and hit the number associated with the person she wants to call.
