Use it for Time Machine backup.

Needed more space to hold the continous backup process and this was it.

No problems with install or formatting.

Very quiet and no problems so far.

            • Data storage

Comments about WD Desktop Mainstream 3TB Internal Hard Drive:

I had no problem installing this Western Digital Desktop 3TB internal hard drive (model WDBH2D0030HNC-NRSN)following the guidelines and instructions I found on-line at various Windows related web sites. I have a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (64 bit operating system) machine. I am using the drive as a data storage drive since my circa 2009 motherboard (EVGA x58 Classified 760)and Win 7 Ultimate x64 operating system support large/over 2 TB hard drives, but my system originally had only a 1.5 TB data drive. I use a Kingston 120GB Solid State Drive for the boot drive, also available from Staples by the way. I recommend that you check your PC's motherboard and operating system capabilities before buying this 3TB drive or going above 2TB with any drive as it may not support the full capacity, even as a purely data storage drive, without a BIOS update, special driver or utility program, or an add-on hard drive sata interface card. New(er) systems should be able to support the drive's full capacity and allow it to be used as a boot drive. I had to locate this drive in a larger drive bay in my PC and scrounge for the needed mounting hardware in my parts drawer - the drive did not come with any mounting hardware except screws. It did not even come with an sata cable, so be prepared to provide your own or purchase one at Staples separately. After installing the drive, on boot up, my system detected the drive correctly without any need to tweak it. Then in Windows, using the disk management function, I set up the drive. You can find instructions on how to do this on-line as well. After setting the drive up, including creating a partition to use for C: drive system images created weekly, I ran some drive checking utilities, which found no errors at all. I transferred the data files, photos, mp3's, Word documents, and so forth, accumulated over the years using RichCopy, a free fast file copying utility you can find on-line. Then defragmented the new data drive and checked data integrity again - no errors detected. I then created a system image of the C: boot drive on the partition I created on the new drive for this purpose. Although Windows 7 is very reliable, anything can happen, so it is a good idea to have a system image of a working boot drive to fall back on (use to restore your system) should something go wrong. I have had to restore from a system image a handful of times when something went wrong, usually due to a third-party software program fouling things up. It is a whole lot faster than reinstalling windows, although one time, my system fell prey to a glitch which prevented me from recovering from any of my system images and I had to reinstall windows from my original 2009 recovery disk provided by my OEM and then go through all the updates since 2009. Since I store all my data on separate data drives, nothing important was lost except time. To avoid that pain in the future, besides the system images, I now have a spare 120 GB SSD clone of a working fully updated windows C: drive so I can just clone that on to my system drive should I be unable to restore from a system image, or swap the drives should I have a hardware failure. I got my spare Kingston SSD from Staples on sale for under $100 as I recall, well worth the investment since reinstalling windows can take many hours. The Kingston drives come with cloning software which works perfectly in my experience. After copying the data onto my new 3TB drive, I encrypted it with the windows BitLocker untility, since some of the data could be considered sensitive - tax returns, bank statements, etc. On a large drive like this, BitLocker takes many hours to run, so I suggest running it overnight - same with the defragmenting, by the way.

Comments about WD Desktop Mainstream 3TB Internal Hard Drive:

Huge capacity, energy efficient and price, those are the attributes that you should look for in a storage system. If you are looking for a daily driver or video streaming setup, you are looking in the wrong place.
