Honestly, I have bought 3 500gb Sata II drives. Seagate, Maxtor and Western Digital. Eventhough Seagate and Maxtor has longer warrantee; however, they made Loud Noise when I transfer or install programs. Western Digital is the best of all three. I never use WD; however, after this baby. Bye bye to seagate and maxtor. Thank you so much western, u made my life less noisy

This WD 500G hard drive is the worst choice you could make. After shopping for large slave (secondary) hard drive I chose this WD because of their reputation but boy was I WRONG. The first one I received was defective from the start so WD replaced it using their RMA program. A pain when I needed one at the time I bought the first one. After one year and 3 months the replacement one crashed in the middle of doing a newsletter causing me to miss a deadline. The drive started intermittently locking up and then without time to back up any files, it vanished from computer recognition. Running the diagnostic software showed that the hard drive had 15 attritubes that are below tolerance. [...]I'll never buy any WD product and would advise that you didn't either! Their products are JUNK.

Cons

Comments about Western Digital® Caviar® Blue™ 500GB Internal SATA Desktop Hard Drive (7200 RPM):

The manufacturer's packaging does not disclose the fact the buyer can not install Vista operating system on the HD. Once you are home, unpackaged the product and read the enclosures (or try to install Vista) you then learn it isn't compatible with Windows Vista OS.

Comments about Western Digital® Caviar® Blue™ 500GB Internal SATA Desktop Hard Drive (7200 RPM):

I had recieved this as a gift and installed it into my PC as a backup hard drive for my important files and pictures. The drive was quite fast and quiet. But fast and quiet DOESN'T make up for quality. I had a power flash at the house and the computer was on a power surge protector. When I restarted the computer back up, the hard drive started checking for errors. After 2 1/2 days, the computer remained stuck on 4% complete. Tried to restart the PC again and the hard drive was fried. I never had this happen with Maxtor or any other hard drives. I will NEVER buy WD Hard Drives AGAIN!!!!

Very easy to install, quiet and fast. You can't do any better than that, at least as far as hard drives go. In my 15+ years of upgrading computers, Western Digital hard drives have always been reliable and never had one go bad. So far, this drive has been no exception. Great performing drive. Highly recommended.
