Western Digital has decided to embed their Virtual CD Smartware into this drive so that you cannot, under any circumstances, disable or remove the VCD. It will forever mount this unwanted intrusion to your Mac (Windows is no better apparently) and their website essentially tells you that you can do nothing about it.

I am returning the HD post haste.

Does NOT backup ALL user files. Has a predetermined extension list that does not include critical files for databases and accounting packages. No way to expand the list or customize to include omitted files. Technical support offered NO SOLUTION. Product should be discontinued.

This is my 2ND WD external drive, but the 1st with the auto backup software. Since the 500 GB is more than enough space for my needs I also manually backup everything onto the drive myself because frankly, I don't trust their software for backups, (Though the software can check for hard drive problems and firmware updates, which is something I do like). I don't feel I have enough control over it, and it seems they are trying to make baking things up idiot proof. I turn it on, let the software do it's thing, then back up everything that I feel I need to back up, that way I know it's on there. Once set up, backups do not take long, and the drive works well.
