Add storage space to your local area network to serve as local cloud storage with this 1TB networked hard drive from WD. The My Book Live drive can be attached to your LAN for use by any network device attached to the same LAN, allowing you to access the stored data easily from any of the devices present.

Shared Network Storage
The WD My Book Live can be used as shared network storage on a LAN. Any data, such as media files, can be stored on the drive and then shared with any device that has access to that same network. This includes mobile devices, which can use the drive to extend their storage capability, using the drive to quickly access anything from photos to music without having to use the mobile device's storage space.

Backup Capability
The My Book Live ships with the WD SmartWare PC backup software. It's also compatible with Apple's Time Machine backup software. For end users, this allows the device to be used as an external backup device, saving your selected files and directories so that they can be restored to your computer system if the copy on that system become corrupted or lost.

Speedy Data Delivery
The My Book Live from WD contains an 800 MHz CPU that helps with the device's performance speed. With the CPU present, data is found and delivered from the drive at increased speeds, beating those of traditional USB 2.0 data devices. This allows you to stream high-definition movies without a drop in frame, or access large files quickly and easily.

This NAS drive is wonderful. I got a great deal from Staples with an already on sale price and a coupon 10% off. Makes a great present! Easy setup, didn't even bother installing the software that came with it. I installed a ton of movies, music and photos on this drive. I can access it from my WD TV Live Plus box, my HTPC, my wives pc, my pc. I love this networked drive. I upgraded from a regular USB WD 1TB drive. Well, I still use that drive as well. If you have been wanting to get a NAS this is the time to do it. If you didn't get what you wanted this holliday season, get this drive.

The only thing I didn't like about this drive was that there is no USB port on the back. I see some others out on the market that you can plug a wireless addapter or another USB drive into. Not really a major flaw, just would have made this unit nicer.

Bought one unit to replace my current Internet backup plan and save money in the long run. I'm glad I didn't cancel the service right away.

After updating the firmware, performing a tedious setup across several machines at home, which are running Windows XP, Windows 7 and Linux, I thought I had a nice backup solution, with automated schedules, etc. The first month the backups were successful, however such a short period I noticed the red light in the unit was permanently on and decided to take a look and confirm if the backups were running.

To my dismay the unit was dead. No power off, cable replacement, cooling or hard reset could restore it. Its only method of management, through the network interface, was useless since the interface was gone.

As far as I know, there was no power outage, no incident that could justify such failure. Considering WD reputation, I thought I had bad luck, until I searched for the terms: mybook live red light. Lots of people having the same experience as me. Never again.

2mb per second write time. Wasted hours reinstalling software at the suggestion of their techs. Wasted even more time reinstalling and reconfiguring software and network. If you like beating your head against the wall and wasting time - buy this product!

Even though WD claims it's "Smartware" is compatible with XP, XP comes back and says that it is not. (It does not mention XP Pro, which I am running. I have updated the software and drivers to no avail and am returning the unit.

Great drive that I bought on Black Friday.
Very easy to setup and access.
Only wish it had a USB connection. Other than that, so far, so good. Would have given it five stars with a USB connection
