The drive is very quiet and nice looking. The most frustrating problem is trying to access a password protected folder on the drive. The common folders can be accessed easily by typing \\mybooklive\ on the address bar and opening the common drive. However, if the folder is password protected, you may either get an error message that you do not have permission to access this network resource, or the user id and password will not get accepted in the pop-up window. I was able to get around it replacing the word mybooklive with the IP address of the drive. The user id and password then get accepted and the folder is accessible.

It sounded so easy - a 2TB network storage drive that my entire family could use to backup their data and share music and photos. Then I made the mistake of installing WD Smartware. After two years of perfectly reliable operation, my HP laptop started freezing for no reason, my USB ports shut down, and instead of going to sleep when I close the display, it just keeps running until I pull the plug and kill the power. None of this has ever happened until the Smartware installation failed a few days ago. Then...oh, and then!...I discovered that there is no uninstall feature for WDC's software and because the install failed, Windows Vista can't uninstall it and Windows restore won't get rid of it either! It's the 21st Century. How can a major hardware vendor not include an uninstall feature??? As a professional system builder, I've installed and used hundreds of Western Digital products without serious problems, but this is intolerable. The only good news out of this upgrade idea is that Staples made the return process very easy and I now have a new 2TB USB drive (made by Seagate!) which cost half as much as the WDC network drive, which will (hopefully) plug and play a little more easily into the USB port on my router. BOTTOM LINE: Using this product and its included software will put your computer and data at risk. Avoid this product!

Comments about Western Digital WD My Book Live 2TB NAS (Network Attached Storage) Network Drive:

This product was easy to install and is only slightly larger than my modem. It makes an excellent addition to our office, so we can access files quicker. Before we had to have each computer turned on, so we could access the files that were on that certain computer. Now we have all shared files in one place! Also makes backup quicker, because all the important files are kept on this drive. The compact size is amazing! I can't believe 2 TB of data can fit into such a small amount of space! Great product for the money!

Comments about Western Digital WD My Book Live 2TB NAS (Network Attached Storage) Network Drive:

I use this as a fail-safe backup for two Macs that have Time Machine and external storage. It also works as a source for my iPad, iPod and iPhone to get access to items I don't want to put on them directly. Works great so far, though installation was a bit tricky. I recommend this for any person who is looking for a second backup source to sensitive and hard (if not impossible) to replace items. I have found that downloading from it is fast and uncomplicated, which is essential when I'm in another room and don't want to bother with my iMac.

Comments about Western Digital WD My Book Live 2TB NAS (Network Attached Storage) Network Drive:

I did have some minor issues setting up this product. At first it seemed easy but the majority of the network I was trying to set it up on was XP and the software wouldn't even run on xp. Luckily they had a Windows 7 pc I was able to use as well.

Once I got it going, and all devices were plugged in they could all access the network. However, as soon as I left the next day only one could get online at a time. The errors seemed to be XP only, and the company, thankfully, did help me out through their support.

Support was kind and easy to understand, but it was frustrating every 2 minutes being put on hold while they "researched". I'm sure they have a lot of product but you would think they would have quicker access to the manuals and common issues.

As a Power user/pc Tech it was easy for me to get it setup the way I think it should have worked, but it didn't work that way. That's why I didn't give it 5 stars. It does deserve it because for a home use one login is probably enough, and lets face it, the business I was helping is really behind the times with so many XP computers.

drive comes with no instructions. Must search web sites to find a 140 +/- page "pdf" file for a user manual, which amounts to reading a book while learning to do brain surgery, Paper instructions probably save pennies per unit, that next year will sell for half of current prices, and at half price will still be profitable.

            1 answer

            • A:

This storage device is a NAS, or network attached storage, server. Its only data connection is via the Ethernet port. You need to connect this NAS server to a free Ethernet port on your router. Once connected, it can be accessed by any computer on your home network. If you cannot locate it near the router then you may need to consider other connection options. You might look into getting set of Ethernet over power line adapters. This avoids the need to run any additional wires through the walls of your house.
