Comments about Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB Portable Hard Drive:

My son recommended it. He keeps his development environment on it. I wanted inexpensive, easy to install additional storage for my documents and pictures. I plugged it in, moved the my documents folder to it, and it worked. I bought one for my sister for automatic backup.

Comments about Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB Portable Hard Drive:

I tried it on both a PC and a Mac. The first time plugging it into the Mac it was not recognized. I had to plug it back into the PC and reformat it with its own utility first, then tried again and it was recognized. From there it works about the same on Mac or PC equally well. The biggest disappointment was I could find no way to remove the Virtual CD that is preloaded with the Back-up & security software. I prefer not to use it, but it offers no way to get rid of it. This is not what I purchased it for. Does not seem to work very well as a portable drive either. While it works as a back-up device, it is very complicated for the average user to use as a device to transport files between computers due to the Virtual CD with the Back-up & Security software. If you want it simply to back up your local files, it will work. If you want to transport large files between computers, try something else. The WD website is of no help in trying to resolve the issues I encountered and no information about removing the VCD and preloaded software.

Comments about Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB Portable Hard Drive:

Works great and is very quiet. With my newer computers, no problems. However, I have a 4-yr old laptop that does not (apparently) put enough power into the USB ports to run it. It will not install the necessary drivers and computer will not "see" it.
