Been running Windows 7 Home Edition for a month. Very happy. My laptop doesn't freeze as it did with Windows XP Home. I worried about compatibility glitches (I experienced problems years ago when I upgraded to Windows XP on an older laptop). So far, 100% of my hardware & software is compatible with Windows 7. It took a full weekend to install all of the upgrades, for example drivers for DVD, video card, mouse, printer, etc. because my system dates back to Mar. 2008. But, everything works great.

I am fortunate a friend is a techie, who did the installation. I watched. It was very straightforward but time-consuming. Microsoft has a nice tool on its website to verify your system's compatibility with Windows 7, itemizing every piece of software or firmware that must be addressed. Highly recommend starting there before buying it.

Also, if you can add a dedicated SD card to boost the RAM, do it. Processing multiple app's is much faster ...and an SD card is relatively inexpensive.

Staples had the lowest price on both Windows 7 & the 32MB SD card.

OS appears to be snappier than Vista. A little easier to navigate and interface is prettier. Synthetic bench marks are better and worse with 80% being "slightly' better. Boot time went from 1 min 45 sec to 55 sec from cold to desktop "BUT" apps are still loading 20 sec after desktop showes up. If you use 7 upgrade advisor (which is also built into the disk) note that "recommended" uninstall suggestions are actually must do's. If your using "upgrade" install choice rather than "custom", 7 won't let you install until you do these things. Set aside 2-3 hours to get "stuff" installed and working. If your looking for a very minor speed up, prettier interface and bragging rights for the latest & greatest then 7 will do it with little heart ache and minor install issues. In reality this should have been called Vista SP3.

Comments about Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (Upgrade Version):

For all the complaints I've had about Vista, my naive assumption was that Microsoft would make the transition from Vista to 7 as easy as possible. Not. Had to reinstall several programs and resolve issues with others. And, for all of that Windows 7 still crashes Outlook several times a day. Better off to buy a computer with Windows 7 pre-installed.
