I was very cautious making this decision to upgrade from XP to 7. I never bought Vista, but many friends and family encountered problems and would turn to me for help - help I couldn't provide because it was difficult to learn the Operating System without owning it. XP has been good to me for several years. It's the best OS I've owned - never crashing once. But I needed more memory (RAM) to run video editing software faster than I could with XP Home 32 Bit. Until Vista (which is a 64 Bit O.S.), PCs woould only recognize, and use, up to 3.5 GB of RAM - even if you had 8 GB installed! When installing Windows 7, you can choose to install it as 32 bit OR 64 bit (provided the hardware requirements are met), so I went with W7 Pro 64-bit, and then installed 8 GB RAM which will all get used! Download and run Microsoft's Windows Upgraded Advisor that will scan your PC and inform you what you need to upgrade.

PROS:
FAST! I installed Windows 7 on a new solid state drive (SSD) and it is so fast that it fully boots up within 15 seconds, and shuts down in 3 seconds!
SMART!
When installing software, it asks for your apporoval to have it "start automatically upon system boot up" which helps keep start ups quick. Many programs will just add "start ups" without letting you know. W7 prevents that.
SMART AGAIN!
If you're a multi-tasker like me, you have several windows open and minimized on the task bar. Just cruise over the tassk bar and a small version of that window is previewed to remind you what it is.
CON:
COMPATIBILITY!
The only thing that I dislike about Windows 7 is that my video editing software by ULead, only 1 1/2 years old, is not compatible. It's possible there's a way to get it installed, but I haven't found it yet.

I bought Windows 7 Professioinal because I was interested in the XP Mode. I found out later that windows XP mode does not work with Parallels.

I bought Windows 7 Professioinal because I was interested in the XP Mode. I found out later that windows XP mode does not work with Parallels.

If you are installing Windows 7 on a virtual machine on a Mac computer in Parallels, you are better off saving $100 and getting the Windows 7 HOME version, there don't appear to be any material differences between home and professional other than the XP mode, which you wouldn't be able to use.

Windows 7 erases all your pre-installed factory goodies, codecs, even Microsoft products. If you own Vista Premium, get used to it. Put your factory installed discs back on. Unless you want to start from absolute scratch with Windows 7. I wasn't really impressed with anything really but the new designs of wallpaper.

Windows 7 elliminates Outlook Express or Windows mail. It gives you their version of Linux or Mac mail. No choices unless you pay an extra hundred bucks for Outlook (office version)
