If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Additional requirements to use certain features:
  • Internet access (fees may apply)
  • Depending on resolution, video playback may require additional memory and advanced graphics hardware
  • For some Windows Media Center functionality a TV tuner and additional hardware may be required
  • Windows Touch and Tablet PCs require specific hardware
  • HomeGroup requires a network and PCs running Windows 7
  • DVD/CD authoring requires a compatible optical drive
  • BitLocker requires Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2
  • BitLocker To Go requires a USB flash drive
  • Windows XP Mode requires an additional 1 GB of RAM, an additional 15 GB of available hard disk space, and a processor capable of hardware virtualization with Intel VT or AMD-V turned on
  • Music and sound require audio output

For those who just want it all from Microsoft, Windows 7 Ultimate (Upgrade Version) has what you want. Expect to pay more for all the features packed in. The ease of installation could vary from person-to-person based on experience.
I would recommend using the advanced install option in the installation and perform a clean install for a more robust installation. As always, backup everything important before proceeding with setup.

I am not sure its worth the 219 upgrade.
I run the upgrade advisor first before installing, but it didn't warned me about BIOS update for my XPS Dell laptop (less than 2 years old), so when I started install I had to exit and then download BIOS update. Install took around 4 hours. After done I downloaded the other languages update and installed Arabic language. after few hours, windows froze, I had to go to a prev. restore point, recovered fine after the restore. Pinnacle ultimate didn't work after the upgrade, the upgrade advisor did warned me about this, I downloaded an update and then it worked fine. I am not sure the boot up time is ahorter after the upgrade. The number of crashes and problems with windows did decrease after upgrading from vista to
windows 7 ultimate. Once the shutdown button used to shutdown the pc dissapeared, so I had shutdown the pc using the power button in the pc.

              Did not ORIGINALLY want to get Windows 7 ULTIMATE, but existing OS was Vista ULTIMATE. Therefore, it was REQUIRED that I upgrade ONLY to Windows 7 Ultimate. I think that is a "bummer." I have had a few (less than 5) difficulties with existing or added applications. Overall, though, this is a great operating system.
