I have 3 music and technical magazine subscriptions that I have subscribed to over 12 years. I also have become a pack-rat of a hoarder of technical books and guides (mostly paperback). This combined with my wife's subscriptions has resulted in over 4 bookshelves worth of paper in our home. I needed a way to digitally store all of my articles of interest and be able to search them for key words afterwards. I needed a full-duplex (2-sided) scanner, because I old one was not. I found this for only [$]. It not only scans in duplex, but scans both sides simulataneously. It also has OneTouch software that lets you save items into many formats including searchable PDFs (or sPDF), which is my go-to format for archiving. I wish I invested in this years ago, because now I have a few months of scanning and archiving, but it is highly convenient. The documentation says about a 50page scanning capacity, but I have put in a 130pg magazine (65page - 2sided) and scanned with no problems. I simply cut of the spine of my paper backs and/or magazines and put them in the ADF (automatic document feeder). Sometimes a few pages get jammed or stick together, but all scanners do this at some point during ADF scanning. Now when I'm working in my studio on my PC or laptop, I am more inclined to access my tutorials, articles, and guides since they are digitally stored right on the PC that I am working on. My creativity has now increased. I don't have to get up and hunt down books on a shelf. I just dial them up from my hard drive and go!!

Unless you are a geek, the setup is impossible. Once properly configured, one touch 'scan to e-mail' (Outlook 2007) works well with zero flaws. We scan everything from heavy stock time cards to credit card slips. 99 Flexible programming settings for many different uses, .bmp, .jpeg, .tiff, .pdf, .ocr. We use this as a central point in the office attached to a local XP PC, and 'send to file' on different networked machines (XP & 7) by simply pressing the scanner selector (destination), then press 'scan' button. Duplex works well. The flatbed background is black which wastes toner if you print the scan, should be white. The included software which is supposed to crop the scan to a white background does not work and chops up the scan. The included instructions are useless.

Comments about Xerox Documate 3220 Document Scanner:

For what I paid for this scanner I thought it would at least reproduce pictures decently, even though it is not a color scanner. I also would have been very happy to have wireless capability, which this scanner does not have. However, it is super for fast scanning of contracts and other text documents.

Comments about Xerox Documate 3220 Document Scanner:

We had to replace this machine. It never scanned any document straight - always crooked. It did not matter if we used the feeder or the glass - though we could set the paper up crooked on the glass - just not able to close the cover properly. Repeated calls to the manufacture resulted in little help or even an offer to replace/repair. We opened the box and set it up 2 weeks after the purchse date so our return time through Staples passed (15 days) before we realized how bad the problem was. The only positive I can say is that the resolution was decent.

It recommends that you need to be familiar with windows which makes sense. But you shouldn't have to read 300 pages of guides to get the basics done. A simple getting started guide would be helpful.

                  1) This product does scan at 300 dpi. How fast is a 300 dpi B&W scan, using the flatbed? 2) What size is the flatbed - please do not give the dimensions of the entire machine, only the flatbed glass. 3) Does it auto-crop (the existing answer is not responsive). Please note that I have read the specifications.

                  • A:

Scanning speed depends on the type of material being scanned. At 300 dpi a 8.5" x 11" of printed text (black & white) take approx 3 seconds to scan. The scanner glass is 10" x 17" in size. Auto crop with depend on which of the included software packages you are using to control the scanning operation. It can be configured to auto crop.

The Xerox Documate 3220 Document Scanner scans at a speed of 23 ppm when set to simplex and 46 imp when set to the duplex setting. These settings are for a scan speed of 200 dpi for black and white scans. There appears to be no setting for 300 dpi. This same speed is available for both black and white and color. The size of the flatbed is 4.9 “h x 12.7” w x 17.8” d and it weighs 8.4 lbs... There is a question on the Q&A page of Staples.com where someone asks about the auto crop feature and it says there is sensor image technology that is used for this feature though it is not mentioned in the specifications. I hope this information helps you. Thanks and have a great day.
