      I bought this Xerox laser printer to replace an old inkjet printer. I only print occasionally, not everyday. I might need to print something today but then go 2 or 3 months before I need to print again. So I've always had issues with inkjet cartridges drying out in between my sporadic printing needs. It was a huge waste. Well, I don't need to worry about that anymore with my new Xerox laser printer since the laser toner is already dry.

      The Xerox Phaser 3040 was very easy to set up. The printer driver was simple to install from the included CD and works on my Windows 7 OS without any problems. Even the USB cable is included so there's nothing extra you need to buy. It has a small footprint, which is one of the reasons why I chose this printer over the Brother HL-2240 laser printer. It even takes up less space than my old inkjet printer.

      The print speed is very fast and print quality is what you'd expect from a laser printer, crisp and clear. I am also satisfied with the quietness of the printer as it's printing. There is a master On/Off switch on the right side of the printer. The control panel on top of the printer consists of one button and two LEDs. I have no idea what the button is for, or why I would ever need to press it. As for the LEDs, the only thing I figured out so far is that as long as neither of them are glowing orange or blinking, all is good.

      This is a very basic laser printer. It does not automatically print on both sides of a page (duplexing). It also does not have wifi connectivity. If you need to have those features, then you'll need to spend more on a better printer and not cheap out like I did.

      The toner cartridge seems to be extremely easy to replace, whenever that becomes necessary. You can check the level of the toner through the printer software that gets installed on your computer. The only thing I will be wary of is the cost of the replacement toner cartridge, which Staples currently sells for only ten bucks less than I paid for the printer itself! But I do see 3rd party sellers offering toner refill kits and replacement toner chips for relatively low cost, so I think I may go that route when the time comes. The included starter toner cartridge is rated a approximately 700 pages, which I think should last me about 10 years.

      This thing is terrible. It jams each and every time I attempt to print anything, pulling multiple pages into the feeder and jamming the whole apparatus. I could accept this if it was easy to remove the jam. However, it is jamming as the paper is exiting the printer, and there is no way to access this. Thus, I have to pull the paper out in 1/2" x 1/2" chunks.

      Could I be using the wrong paper and causing these jams? Perhaps, but I don't know for sure because the support page (linked from Xerox's support site) that supposedly lists acceptable paper does not include this model.

      Sorry I wasted my rewards points on this thing, but at least I didn't pay for it.

          I purchased this for my my use when our larger multi function printer was in use. I was surprised to find that a printer at this price arrived with a full cartidge of toner. I was further surprised to find that it worked so well. The small size and the economical price allowed me to purchase two more for use at our counter area creating greater effiency assisting the public and more efficient use of our time. This printer does what it advertises. I have no complaints and I am considered to be hard to please.

                  The Xerox Phaser 3040B laser printer is officially only compatible with Windows 2003 Server, Window 2008 Server, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP and Mac OS version 10.5 and higher. Because Windows 8 is so new, it may be a month or two before Windows 8 is added to the compatible list.

                  This is strictly a printer. There are no other function keys and/or a scan bed on this model.
                  I might suggest a Lexmark X2670, or a Canon PIXMA4120 All-In-One for example.
