I went into the store to purchase the regular (vertical) version of this unit. Bought this unit, because the salesperson at the store I purchased it from forgot to remove the sale price of [$] (the sale was over, I found out after the fact)... So they honored sale price. It had to get ordered anyway. Received it to store as expected and on time. The unit is heavy. Try to assemble the unit as close to where it will be staying. Assembly is much easier with two people. I had my wife help me. You can do it alone, but it will be a bit of a struggle. Uses wood dowels, cam locks/studs and some wood screws (back of drawers) for assembly...There isnt much bad news (from me) to report. I did have trouble loading the drawers into the main cabinet. Found out that the drawer guides w/ ball bearing on the lower right side were bent. (this could have been from me). I had to fix it by relocating the bearings back into their "homes" and rebending the corner of the guide that was bent. Just remember, if it doesnt fit at first dont jamb/force it like me, and you should be fine... The only 'cons' I have with the unit are: 1) My unit had a missing glider "foot" pad... looked throughout the box, cant find it. (I have carpet here, so don't really care. (they're like $2.00 at the hardware store should I be that worried about it or move it to a hardwood floor. 2) The lock in my opinion is good, however, the location IMO, should have been in the center of the drawer. It does lock fine, but you can see the non-security of the lock being on the right when you try to open the drawer. The left side will move while the right is tight... (perhaps being picky here?) 3. The glue they give you will barely glue the wood dowels together. I 100% recommend buying a good WOOD glue, and running a bead along all joints where the dowels are to insure a sturdy construction. I did not run into any of the other problems some reviewers have had... IE: drawers touching or scratching surfaces... or metal guides falling out upon opening... etc. There are no closed position-catches on the drawers, so the will open on their own if tipped forward for any reason.Note: noticed some reviewers are using this as a storage unit. NOTE: THIS IS A HANGING FOLDER FILE CABINET. The drawer bottoms are not designed for weight. It's unfair to give a bad review for something it's not designed to do. If you can get it to work as a storage drawer, than bonus for you. Might take some modifications to make that work. I can see why people would want it as a storage unit, seeing that the drawers are very deep, and the unit looks like it belongs as part of someone's bedroom set as well as being nice office furniture. On the 'pro' side, this is more room than I'll need for my personal use home office. remember I was going to buy the smaller one, but the stores insight to remove their sale bin-tags won me over. The unit is sleek looking and stylish in its Cherry finish. It is a laminate, so I can not review the strength or quality of the laminate... Time will tell on that one. Use your best judgement, as with any laminate. No wet drinks on surface, etc... Also using the top surface to hold my home printer/fax machine. My printer/fax is small and light. I believe you could even hold a much heavier machine on there, if one needed too... I will try to include a photo of mine, and my setup to add to this review. Good luch with your decision, overall I like it, and would recommend it. If you can get it at the sale price, like I did... then bonus... If not I say it's still worth the retail of [$]

I bought this file cabinet from Staples on 6/21/2009 (before I read any reviews). The cabinet looks nice (except for the 3/4-inch chip on the front...it was like that when I opened the box), and the standard assembly was fairly easy (especially for someone who put together a bunch of furniture items previously), but as many others have stated, the bottom drawer hits the bottom piece of the frame (which will cause chipping) when it's pushed in (even when the drawer is empty). The drawer slides are attached to the drawers at the factory, so this problem is not caused by any assembly error on my part. To fix this problem, I removed the 2 front screws (out of the 3) from each of the 2 slides on the 2 drawers (I had to adjust the top drawer in order to make room to raise the bottom drawer), re-adjusted the slides (swung them down slightly while leaving the back screw in...which acted as the pivot), and re-screwed the 2 front screws (on each slide) into a couple of the extra holes in the slide. This raised both drawers slightly, and this seems to have fixed the bottom drawer problem. Next problem: The bottom of each drawer is made of rather flimsy cardboard-like board, and when the time came to install the drawer bottoms, I noticed the sticker on each bottom that says something like "This bottom is not designed to bear weight. Use hanging folders only." In other words, if you plan to use a drawer for books, cds, etc., the bottom will most likely collapse (and you probably won't discover this until you have put most of the cabinet together). So, to fix THIS problem, I bought 4 metal "corner braces" from the hardware store and installed them (with screws) inside the bottom drawer (I only plan to add a lot of weight to the bottom drawer) to add support to the bottom of the drawer. While I'm listing complaints, I have one more: the provided little tube of glue is definitely not enough glue...I used the glue very sparingly as I glued the dowels into position, and I thought I was doing well, until I reached the part of the instructions that said to use some glue to hold the drawer bottoms in place...and then I ran out. So, if you have some extra wood glue, you'll want it during assembly. Anyway, I spent [$] on a cabinet that required a lot more work AFTER it was assembled, so I probably won't be buying another one of these in the future.

Comments about Z-Line Wood Lateral File Cabinet, 30" Wide, 2-Drawer, Cherry:

Its very large once you get it in your office but I wanted a file cabinet that could hold alot so very big is good in this case. I like the smooth looks and finish on this file cab. It does have hard particle board construction underneath so I would worry if movers ever had to handle this to another location. I used extra wood glue to supplement the screws. The other thing is that the drawers are a little too smooth and easy to pull out because they slide out themselves just by the gravity of the uneven floor. Problem with the drawers is that they dont latch shut.

I purchased two of these file cabinbets and put both together in 2 hours. The directions are easy to understand and they went together easily! They are very strong and they look great! I have a cherry executive desk and computer desk that I spent a lot of monoey on and these file cabinets look like they were part of the set. The only con is that the whole drawer does not fit legal files! You have to put the files from back to front, I thought they went the whole length of the cabinet. If you're using regular sized files, you're fine. GREAT CABINETS, A MUST BUY!

Comments about Z-Line Wood Lateral File Cabinet, 30" Wide, 2-Drawer, Cherry:

Just finished putting this file cabinet together today and transferred our files into it. I am very impressed with how it looks -- very nice cherry wood finish. It complements other furniture (different brands) we have with the same finish, which was a nice surprise. Overall it seems very durable, drawers are working well. Putting it together was fairly straightforward. My only complaint -- a minor one -- is that I had to shave a little bit off one corner of a drawer bottom, which was made of particle board, because the grooves didn't quite match for it to slide all the way in. But it was easily remedied. Overall, I'm very happy with it.

Wonderful, sturdy, great looking cabinet--perfect for our needs and we will use it almost every day! Great price and relatively easy to assemble (my husband said). Got this cabinet on sale and it was worth every penny! My hubby is kind of a perfectionist and said it went together well. He added extra carpenter's glue to every joint just to make sure it was good and sturdy because it is a very heavy cabinet.[...]
