Bought this when the second leased modem from Comcast gave it up. Installation on a home network with a Linksys WRT54GL router was no problem at all. Unlike the original leased Motorola or the replacement leased RCA/Thomson, the Zoom doesn't provide a status page that can be viewed in a browser to show errors and warnings, but that's not very important for me.

Nearing EOL (End of Life) and obsolescence as Comcast moves on to offering faster speeds, when they force digital TV on all subscribers to free-up bandwidth. You might get 2 years out of it before wanting/needing to upgrade. At this EOL point, I would've expected to get a DOCSIS 3 MoDem for the price. My DOCSIS 1 MoDem died & my spare DOCSIS 1, being already EOL, Comcast wouldn't support installation of another MAC address. They DID support the old one right up until it died and, a friend's is going strong as well so, if your DOCSIS 1 is still working good enough for you, don't give it up just yet.Bought in desperation at Staples, after pricing them online and in another store, 'cause I had an inkjet recycling checque, [...]Unless you REALLY need one today, wait for DOCSIS 3 to become the only option and drop in price.

Comments about Zoom Telephonics Zoom 42M External Cable Modem:

I just bought this modem this morning at my local Staples and it was a breeze to set up. I didn't use the usb setup option so I didn't have to install any of the software that came with it. I already noticed a large difference in speed as compared to the WebStar modem I was using that was supplied by Charter. (that modem kept getting disconnected as well) So far I have already been able to download music, surf the net, and watch an entire movie on Netflix without any disconnections. If you are on a budget and want a good connection to internet then this modem is the one for you.

Comments about Zoom Telephonics Zoom 42M External Cable Modem:

The Zoom cable modem is a great buy at the price, much lower than Motorola, and it is simple to install, works like a charm and comes with a 5 year warranty. You (or at least, I did) have to call Comcast to verify the Mac address of the modem, but that was simple, also, with great tech support on their end. 5 stars.

Out of the box, connected cables and system came right up without any configuring. Does what a cable modem is supposed to.
