Shopping for elementary school supplies can be a lot of fun for parents and children alike. Although the necessary school supplies will differ between schools, most lists for grades 3 through 5 include the same basics.
Arts and Crafts, Essential Elementary School Supplies
Arts and crafts activities are valuable teaching tools for any elementary school class. Children in grades 3 through 5 should have an array of crayons, washable markers, colored pencils and paint. Many teachers will also ask for glue, safety scissors and at least one pack of construction paper.
Students will Need Paper and Notebooks
Regardless of the grade, paper and notebooks are essential school supplies. While it will depend on the school and sometimes even the class, expect to purchase a mixture of composition books, notebooks and filler paper. Notebooks are available in single or multiple subject formats, so choose the type that makes organization easiest for your child. Graph-ruled notebooks and index cards may also be needed for science, math and other classes.
Binders and Folders Keep Papers Organized
If the child uses composition books, binders and folders may not be needed. However, if loose-leaf paper is used, binders are handy for keeping the paper neatly together. Zipper binders are a fun and colorful option, although not permissible in all schools. These large binders usually have multiple compartments for easy subject organization and hold between 300 and 500 sheets of paper, pencils and supplies. Staples has a wide variety of zipper binders to choose from in an array of bold colors.
Regular three-ring binders are another option. Available in various widths ranging from 1 to 3 inches, these binders are an ideal choice for elementary school students and don't take up much room in a backpack. Place one or two pocket folders in the front so children have somewhere to keep papers they are currently working on and homework assignments.
Don't Forget Something to Write With
While children in grades K through 2 may have only needed pencils to write with, those in grades 3 through 5 will usually need a selection of pencils and pens. For convenience, purchase packs of 10 or more from Staples so children have plenty on hand. Don't forget to pick up a pencil sharpener, highlighters, a good-size eraser and some correction tape.
Other Supplies Students May Need
While not required by all schools, other supplies, such as a calculator, a pencil case, sticky notes and a ruler, may be useful. Many teachers also ask for general items like tissues, paper towels, liquid hand sanitizer and wet wipes. Fortunately, all of these items can also be found at Staples.
Backpacks Transport Everything Easily
Of course, students will need something to carry all their supplies to and from school, and a backpack is the ideal option. Staples carries a broad selection of backpacks from well-known brands such as Jansport, Ogio and Benrus in a variety of styles and colors. Remember to pick one that's a suitable size for the child to ensure even weight distribution and comfort.
