Kids in grades six through eight need a broad range of middle school supplies to keep up with their homework and stay organized. Ensure they're ready to succeed with a sturdy, fashion-forward backpack as well as useful organization tools and subject-specific materials like calculators, protractors and dictionaries.

Stay Organized at Home and at School

Students need middle school supplies that help them stay organized, especially since middle school is an important bridge to the increased responsibility and independence of high school. Some organizational supplies for middle school are electronic, while others are more traditional. Most students need a variety of binders -- typically one for each class. Binder additions like foldout maps, assignment logs and pencil cases add functionality and make oddball supplies easy to find when needed. A combination calendar and organizer is a must for staying on top of assignment deadlines as well as extracurricular and social obligations.

Many schools now include USB sticks on their middle school supplies list. These compact tools make it easy to transfer files from home to school computers, and they're especially useful when kids are working on large multipart assignments both at home and in the classroom. Many students find a whiteboard is handy for getting used to managing their own schedules. Some even come with preprinted calendars. A selection of colorful dry-erase markers make practical supplies for middle school students that let them color code tasks by subject.

Comfortably Carry Books and More

Backpacks come in materials and designs to accommodate any workload. Kids toting heavy books benefit from backpacks made from heavy canvas with reinforced straps and seams. Ergonomics are important; opt for backpacks with extra straps that fasten across the wearer's chest and hips to help evenly distribute the bag's weight. Style-conscious students will need a fashionable backpack; they can choose from many available colors and patterns.

Students may prefer a bag with a dedicated pocket to hold a smartphone or MP3 player. Some bags offer a port for the headphones' cord, so the user can keep the device securely stowed while listening to it. For kids who want an alternative to backpacks for carrying their supplies for middle school, messenger bags are a smart option. They offer many of the same features as backpacks, but can be worn slung over the shoulder for a casual look.

Perform Complex Calculations

In sixth, seventh and eighth grade, students begin studying higher math subjects, such as algebra and geometry. Therefore, middle school supply lists should include the relevant tools. Geometry students need items like rulers, protractors and compasses to create straight lines and measure angles. Many junior high math and even science classes require a calculator. A scientific calculator performs logarithm and exponent operations as well as sine, cosine and tangent operations.

A graphing calculator performs all the functions of a scientific calculator, and it will be necessary later on when the student studies precalculus and calculus. Graphing calculators also enable the user to input variables and order of operations symbols, such as parentheses, to solve long equations. Though graphing calculators aren't usually necessary middle school supplies, they're a good choice if you don't want to buy an additional calculator in a few years for calculus.
