I have three of these high-capacity beasts, and am generally pleased. They were easy to set up, with a fast-enough response for pro graphics work.\n\nThe backup software/switch is useless on a Mac, but since I use Retrospect, it doesn't matter.\n\nNo power switch is inconvenient, and the BRIGHT light in the front. It lights up my office at night.\n\nWorst part of this drive is that it goes to sleep after about two minutes of no activity, then take a l-o-o-o-n-g time to spin back up. I solved this with a cron job to touch the drive and save a zero-byte drive once each minute. Just Google "cronnix" and "spindown" and you'll find some good advice on setting this up with the cronnix app, if you're not cron-savvy.\n\nThe management software does not have a setting for sleep, and the Preference Pane doesn't affect the drive. No solution from Seagate engineers -- tough luck, I guess. But for the price, I'll write a cron script.\n\nIn short: good drive once the sleep problem is addressed.

I purchased this over a WD after going back and forth on the two. The deciding factor was the 5 year warranty this one carries. WD is just 1!\n\nPros:\nSize of storage available.\nCompact unit stands well on own.\nEase of use.\nEasy to add more than just your MyDocuments to back up.\nAppears quiet.\nPrice of unit (good sale price and Staples online coupon brought price down considerably). \nSeems cool to touch during lengthy backups. \n\nCons:\nThat initially cool white light can get annoying after a while. \nDoes not disconnect from PC without changing a setting under Recycle Bin> Properties> Drives> to delete without saving to Recycle bin. Or just turn off the PC, it will power off then (slight delay).\nDoes not backup system files or thumbs for album graphics.\nNo password protection.\nNo progress time bar; just files displaying on the screen during the backup.\n\nSo far I am happy with it. I hope this helps you decide to save your files.

I use the product for large files for artwork and also to back up key systems on my computer. Unlike the last comment I read, the OneTouch can back up your system if you do it properly. With the software a chimpanzee with a banana can set it up. I would suggest this to anyone with large files like music or video downloads.

I purchased the "OneTouch" because of the Maxtor fanfare about being able to back up your system with OneTouch. The accompanying software does NOT back up your system. It only backs up your Document folder. That is better than nothing but a long way away from backing up your system. If you are looking for a drive package that will backup and restore your system, look elsewhere.
