I travel a couple of times a year, usually once to a popular destination (Europe) and once to an exotic place (India, Cambodia). I take a lot of pictures. The Epson R1900 produces photos that are at least as good as what I'd get from a professional lab. Its main disadvantage is relatively short-lived and rather expensive ink cartridges. After just 100 4x6 photos, most of the cartridges were nearing empty.

I bought this printer after reading reviews, I had owned a Cannon wide format before ,it had great colors and was much more reliable than this one has been. I had to return this printer 3 times for various problemsto the manufacturer , now after 40 prints (13 by 19 and 1 panorama) , I cannot get it to recognize 2 cartridges even though they are brand new, these smart chips the OEM's are putting in these printer to keep people from buying cheaper cartridges have began to cause problems such as this. If and when I get money up for a new one, it probably be the HP or, if Cannon comes up with one that does Panoramas a Cannon.

I terrific printer, Nikonians.org sold me on this printer as it's dye based ink set is perfect for my needs. The only down side was the driver installation. I followed the directions and ended up with the wrong driver installed. I am running MAC OSX 10.5.7 Leopard. The included documentation was not clear on a Leopard install. Once I called Epson, they walked me through deleting the incorrect driver and installing the correct one, now it works as advertised and I love it!

Read every review, best gloss printer period. Got it here for 350 after MIR. "WOW" Can't wait to print on memory discs.People can't believe I printed at home.After purchace , GO to Europe epson ,have earlier releases of updates ect.
If you do more black & white not the best but good. For the price you could set up a Jon Cone 8 gray scale system on a second printer and have the best of both worlds. GOOGLE it.piozography . Smaller Snapshots might cost more than lab but if your considering this printer you are probably after larger capabilities and have a capable camera anyway.
