I actually bought this item to use with straight pins for sewing.It's great because you only get a few pins at a time,you don't put your fingers in the container so no more getting stuck.Only con, the lid doesn't secure so it can spill while not in use.

One problem that I found was that the top does not fit snugly to the bottom. One of my cats tipped it over and all the tacks fell out and I almost stepped on one.
