OMGosh!!! I just received this yesterday, knew I would love it, and I DO! I have always been able to trust WD, and I started selling computers back in the mid 80's, so as long as WD has been around for PC's, I've used them. As several have said, I can't even tell it is on because it is so quiet. Great for when I am downloading or transferring data as my laptop is very quiet too, and I can sleep allow these tasks to run on the computer desk next to my bed. I don't measure speed as much as I do it's ease of use, my ability to do as I want to do and not be limited by some piece of software. I'm already going to buy another if they come back in stock and have suggested same to an astronomy club to store astrophotography pics - massive files.re: documentation - it was almost too easy, and it would have been great had the "picture" docs just had one line of information (in all the languages, of course!): "Now ready to use"! I was looking for a catch...and there simply wasn't one - just start dragging/dropping or cutting/pasting.A very popular online retailer has this drive for the same price but my Staples rewards came in VERY handy and I got this for [$]!!! WOOT!

Worked great for 5 months, then one day it didn't even show up in Explorer any more. I expected more from Western Digital. The drive will be getting RMA'd, but that just gets you a "refurbished" drive that already failed for someone else. I won't be able to trust it to store my backup files any longer. :-(

Testing with the WD Diagnostic Tools shows the "SMART" info from the controller card on the drive to be A-OK. It doesn't even know that it doesn't work any more! Running any test that has to actually access the hard drive data fails.

Occasionally the drive will suddenly appear in Explorer for a few moments, at which time Windows tells me that the drive isn't formatted and asks if I would like to format it now... So much for having good backups.

An external hard drive is just like the hard drive in your computer. Any software and data you store on your computer can be stored on your external hard drive. You may want to obtain an application specifically for backing up your computer so the backup procedure can be automated on a schedule. There are many available and some of them are free.
