Follow the Rules for Cubicle Etiquette

The lack of four solid walls and a door can pose some sticky questions as to how to behave without constantly interrupting your co–workers and hindering their ability to get the job done. Cubicle offices demand a special etiquette in order to allow everyone to remain worker–friendly. Here's some advice:

1.  Don't enter a co–worker's cube unless you're invited or you ask if you may interrupt. And never interrupt someone on the phone, either by talking or gesturing.

2.  If you must share a cubicle, negotiate some "house" rules. To give each other a little breathing space, arrange to take lunch and breaks at different times. This will allow for some degree of privacy during the day.

3.  Keep snacking to a minimum.

4.  Treat your space as if it really had a door. If you truly need peace and quiet, put up a "Do Not Disturb" sign and let co–workers know you're serious.

5.  Remember that speaker phones and cubicles do not mix. And be conscious of how your voice projects. If you know you talk or laugh loudly, make a conscious effort to keep it down.
