What type of index divider do you need?

Write-on index divider

Ideal for: Personal use – dividing and organizing files, binders, reports, and presentations. Write–on tabs act as a reference tool, but do not have the same presentation quality that printer–compatible tabs offer.

Key features:

• Generally 8½" x 11" and three–hole punched to fit standard size binders. Punched edge is usually reinforced to help prevent tearing.
• Has a single tab attached to the edge, into which the user can insert a label. Some index sets are specifically designed so the tabs line up for easy viewing of the tabs.
• Requires user to hand write or type each tab insert. Some tabs are specifically designed as erasable.
• A poly index will typically last longer and endure more wear and tear than traditional paper index pages.
  
  

Pre-printed index divider

Ideal for:  Dividing and organizing binders, reports, presentations, and client information. Tabs are pre–printed and ready to use – no writing or printing needed.

Key features:

• Generally 8½" x 11" or 8½" x 14" and three–hole punched. A few unpunched indexes are available and ideal for dividing documents that will be machine bound.
• Some varieties have a small, attached tab with a single number or letter of the alphabet stamped on it. Tabs are generally black or red leather. Some index pages are copper reinforced on the hole–punched edge to help prevent tearing.
• Some indexes come in an expandable, accordion–style file. Each index has a pre–printed tab with either a letter (A to Z) or a number (generally 1 to 31 for monthly filing).
  
  

Printer-compatible index divider

Ideal for: Dividing and organizing binders, reports, presentations, personal information, and client information. Allows for total personalization of each index page. Print on tabs and/or index page. Printing directly from a computer insures that each index page will look neat and professional. Plus the user can make multiple sets in minutes.

Key features:

• Generally 8½" x 11" and three–hole punched to fit standard size binders. Most three–hole punched sheets have reinforced edges to help prevent tearing. Some indexes are also 9" x 11" to accommodate extra–wide binders or top–loading sheet protectors.
• Specifically manufactured to be compatible with inkjet and laser printers, as well as photocopiers. Note: For best results, use inkjet compatible indexes with inkjet printers and laser compatible indexes with laser printers.
• Preset layouts available for Microsoft® Word, WordPerfect®, AmiPro, Avery LabelPro® and other popular computer programs, which allows for easy design and insures text will not spill off tabs or index pages. Additionally, index manufacturers offer free downloads from their Web sites that makes formatting printer–compatible index dividers simple and easy.
• Most index sets come with a table of content page, which allows user to print, type, write, or photocopy section titles.
• View tab transparent indexes function as a divider and sheet protector. Print index pages with attached tabs and then place the dividers between durable, transparent poly.
• Some dividers have pockets, which allow the user to tuck in extra papers, business cards, diskettes, or notes.
