NEW YORK – Aug. 4, 2009 – Grammy® Winning singer-songwriter Ciara shared the spotlight with youth volunteers today in a national effort to empower teens to give back to the community. Ciara, joined by Chaske Spencer of Twilight and singer Leah Renee, worked side-by-side with volunteers during the 2nd Annual Staples/Do Something 101 national school supply drive event at The Children's Aid Society Dunlevy Milbank Boys & Girls Club in New York. The group filled 5,000 bags with notebooks, calculators, binders and other back-to-school essentials, which will be donated to local students in need in time for the upcoming school year.

Back to school shopping no longer just means pencils and paper. Families of school children and college students expect to spend $18.3 billion on electronics this year – including laptops, home computers and cell phones – accounting for 38 percent of the $47.5 billion that will be spent on all school supplies, according to National Retail Federation data. The spot, which first aired 15 years ago, will be broadcast on national network television tonight, to celebrate and promote today as the official launch of the back-to-school shopping season.

For the second year, Staples will kick-off the season and provide shoppers with a clear roadmap of where and when to find the best products and deals this season.

As part of Do Something 101 (www.dosomething101.org), Ciara is encouraging teens to make a difference this summer by collecting school supplies and dropping them off at their nearest Staples store, from July through September. In addition, Staples customers can get involved by donating $1 at any Staples store with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting local teens in need. Each Staples store is matched to a local educational and not-for-profit organization serving disadvantaged youth, and DoSomething.org and Staples will ensure that all the donations get to these partners just in time to head back to school.
