A little disappointing
By Beckie the ReaderVerified Purchaser from Pineville, NC on 9/10/2008

Cons:
Incomplete Finish, Predrilled Holes Error
Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Primary use:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The three book cases I have assembled are beautiful. But, I had to use my drill because one 'predrilled hole' was missing on all three. I assume the other three I haven't assembled yet will be missing the hole as well. Also, the underside of the permanent shelf was unfinished on the three bookcases I have assemble. You don't notice it unless you are sitting on the floor and look up. Somewhat disappointing since I have purchased cheaper bookcases before which did have all shelves finished on both sides.

I liked the metal locking pieces and the cut out part of the wood. It was really easy to lock the parts together. They make the walls, top, bottom, and shelf fit together well.

I do not like the back. I would rather it had a 1/8 press board solid piece. It is wavy even though I put it on as directed.

I am a teacher using this bookcase in my home office for my many books, and it's far nicer than expected. I was able to put it together all by myself in about 2 hours. Very easy assembly for the most part. (I am a petite woman). Except it is heavy and you need another person to turn it over and move it when done! The only negative is the flimsy cardboard back, but with books on the shelves nobody can tell.

We bought 5 units to display our DVD collection. We discovered that they were quite attractive in the dark Cherry finish. We now are setting up a library, and wanted them to match, so we ordered 5 more sets. The dark color becomes "neutral" amoung all of the colorful book bindings, and is quite attractive. We like the weight of the unit, and have no fear that they will fall over!

Solid construction of pieces. Only drawback was the weight of the shelves due to the "processed wood" used. Easy to assemble and quite attractive when completed. I chose these to display my expensive toy collection and received many compliments. I would suggest using additional metal braces to secure corners for added stability. Recommend for the average DIY homemaker or handyman!

I shopped around a lot before buying these bookshelves. I ended up buying 3 of this size and 3 of the 2 shelf ones. I was very pleased with my purchase. I put all of them together my self (I am a female, btw), and had no trouble whatsoever. The small ones took about 20-30 minutes, the large ones took about 45 minutes each. Most of the time was spent nailing on the back piece. Instructions were simple to follow and once one was put together, the rest were cake.

I went to lots of places and looked at bookcases of all price levels and these were the best for the money. I would put them alongside bookcases at 3 times the price that I looked at in furniture stores and just by looks, they would come out equal or better. The one inch thick shelves are great and can easily hold hardcover books.

Best Uses:

Bottom Line:

The book shelf is in the homework room for a student. It is tall and holds lots of already read books for storage that we don't want to give away, and has space for new books we will buy, plus school books, sketch pads, photo albums and more. Board games sit on the top, as do large empty boxes of computer accessories. Stuffed animals and nick-knacks can decorate shelves in front of books, too. Put the heaviest books on the bottom and have the shelf close to the wall for support if on a carpeted floor. There's nothing bad about it. It's better than any other "ready-to-assemble" shelf unit because it has real wood in it and it looks rich. Have the kids help put in the screws. They'll have fun and feel happy to own it, as do I!

I have one on each side of fireplace in living room, and one in spare bedroom. All are used to display books, but shelves are deep enough to put some nicknacks in front of books.I wish it had come in more finishes,as had wanted either oak or pine color. The one inch shelves are nice, but show some sag with less than the 35lb load limit. The specs indicating "4 adjustable shelves" is incorrect,as only 3 are adjustable. Would like to see shelf holes extended further, and be able to order extra shelves. That way could have more shelves for short books. Also the position of the fixed shelf doesn't allow even spacing of all shelves.Back wont lie flat at joints.

It is being used in a SOHO that is quite visible to guests. It looks rich and stylish. It uses very hevy construction. It was easy to put together (2 hours for the first one and 1 hour for the second one). You can put it together alone (as I did on the first one), but it helps to have help, especially when you go to stand it up. We also placed felt tape on the bottom of both shelves, since they are on hardwood floors.

I bought this bookcase based on the user reviews, but was very disappointed. Besides being heavy, some parts arrived scratched. Assembly was an absolute nightmare. Parts that were supposed to be labeled weren't. The overall quality is very cheap, although it doesn't look that bad once you put books in it. I bought the bookcase when it was on sale; I wouldn't have considered it at the full price. I certainly won't purchase another.

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The product was so poorly designed and constructed that pieces broke and fell apart during assembly. I had to throw it away before it was ever even fully constructed. I have purchased and used many pieces of self-assemble furniture in my lifetime. I have never seen such poor quality. It was shocking.

These are the best bookcases ever that we have purchased. My husband got his for storage of not only books but videos, music, family photo albums he inherited, etc. After seeing how nice and sturdy his were, I purchased mine for storing my art books and plastic storage containers for my art supplies. I love the color, design, sturdiness, changeable shelving, depth of shelves, everything and more!!!!
