Not very good
By KathrynVerified Purchaser from New Jersey on 9/4/2008
Pros:
Lightweight
Cons:
Poor Cutting
Best Uses:
Mostly for photos, Occasional Use
Describe Yourself:
Quality Oriented
Primary use:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Unless you give the cutting arm extra pressure and simultaneously line your edge to meet the blade, it doesn't cut well at all. If you cut a little and want to trim a bit more, it cuts very poorly. Wouldn't buy this again, was tempted to return it but can adjust the working results with pressure on cutting arm, but it requires precision.

Pros:
Lightweight, Stable
Cons:
Flimsy
Best Uses:
Occasional Use
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The price was right on this product, and it does cut well. Beware of cutting very thin/flimsy paper as it will bend the paper more easily than it will cut and your cut will be curved. The instructions recommend adding a layer of stiffer paper underneath to counteract this problem, which I find a bit wasteful and annoying. Having said that, I use this fairly frequently.

I used this product when making engagement announcements. It worked great for the card stock paper, and even vellum. The lines were perect. I also trimmed photos with it but could only cut one at a time to get straight cut lines. It's light wieght so I can move it around to different work surfaces, but I can't store it on a shelf because it sticks out.

Having used a wooden cutter - the piece is too lightweight. The blade had a manufacturing defect that did not allow the blade to come down cleanly. Once a sliver of metal finally broke off - it worked a little better. I am debating going back to my 15-year old dull blade.

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

i have wanted a cutter for a long time, but couldn't justify the price with my family's limited need.

i was installing vinyl tiles at my home and knew i needed a method to cut them, so i took a chance on this product.

i was originally worried about it's toughness because it seemed so light and fragile compared to the cutters i used at work.

those fears were put to rest when i started using the product, however. the high strength plastic is just as rigid and strong as the wooden ones i had used in the past.

i also liked the adjustment bar that allowed ne to really dial in my cuts accurately.

i would definately recommend.

It cuts very well but is almost too lightweight. When you pick up the blade handle to cut it sort of picks up the whole unit. Wish it had a better guide at the top edge for keeping the paper at the edge -- sometimes it slips up and then you get an angled cut.

As others have said, when you raise the cutting knife, you have to move it out to the right or the blade catches on the base of the cutter. Once you pass that catch, you have to push the handle to the left to get a complete, clean cut. I expected more quality for [$]. I wish I had read the reviews before I went to the store to purchase a cutter.

A good all-around cutter, sharp blade, light and portable, but ditch the paper guide. There is a flaw in the machine near the top that causes the blade to catch if lifted too high. Well you have to lift the blade high in order to utilize the paper guide-duh! Shame on you X-acto--I expected a better product from you guys.

I bought this paper cutter because of the name X-Acto and I wasn't disappointed. It cuts rather than chops the paper. Very light weight and easy carrying handle so you don't mess with the cutting blade. Also, cutting arm locks nicely in place when not in use. The sliding paper guide didn't secure well to the paper cutter and I lost it after just the second day of use, oh well.

By LeeVerified Reviewer from Baileys Harbor, WI on 1/9/2008
Pros:
Durable, Lightweight, Stable
Cons:
Difficult to Use
Describe Yourself:

Primary use:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I'm used to a paper cutter where you raise the blade, put in the paper, and chop straight down with the blade. On this one, when you raise the blade all the way to put the paper on, you have to move the blade to the right because it won't cut straight down. Once you pass the catch, then you have to move the blade to the left and cut. I'm willing to pay more money for better quality.

I bought this trimmer today at a local [...], after reading the positive reviews here. It did not disappoint. I have a small business designing and printing paper products, and this is just what I need - sturdy, portable and lightweight. It's also attractive, and that certainly doesn't hurt when you're in the design business! I can bring it to my "print on the go" booth when I'm vending; its handle makes it easy to carry, and the blade "locks" when not in use, unlike my old one. Someday I'll get something larger and more solid, but I'll probably carry this one around until it dies!
