Not so child safe
By Cohen the LibrarianVerified Reviewer from New Jersey on 11/10/2008
Pros:
Lightweight
Cons:
Difficult to Use, Flimsy, Poor Design
Best Uses:
Every Day Use, Office

There is a dial on the blade that says open or locked that is in easy reach and not very clear. It should have some sort of child safety lock like pills have. The dial is very easy to turn. On the first day we used it, the dial was clicked into the open position, the blade and cover popped off and one of us got cut picking the blade back up and putting it back in. I don't think that this is the best choice for having with kids around. Overall, it was a lot lighter than I was expecting. You have to push down to get it to cut, and I think it's kind of flimsy. I think I"m going back to my scissors

Flimsy
By photoman from San Francisco, CA on 10/15/2008
Pros:
Lightweight
Cons:
Flimsy
Describe Yourself:
Quality Oriented
Primary use:
Personal
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Flimsy best describes this product. The blade housing is loosely fitted to the unit and the cutting guide is wobbly. Instead of an easy passing of the blade to cut, you have to apply pressure to the blade to cut through the paper. I am very disappointed in the quality of the product as well as its performance.

I bought it because I desperately needed a paper cutter for a work project and couldn't find any of the arm-style ones. After a couple times using it I want my arm-style cutter back. Yes, it will cut through thin paper but only if you lean heavily on the little roller and only going in one direction. If you don't get the proper pressure on it it causes the paper to shift and if you're cutting multiple sheets (ie 3) you've now ruined the lower sheets. As for the cutting edge I'm still guessing half the time where exactly the blade is going to cut. Maybe it works better for cutting heavier papers like photos but for plain paper that needs precision...get an arm-style cutter.

My old guillotine-type paper cutter broke and I replaced it with this Carl model. I use it mainly to trim photo prints I make with my inkjet printer. It's a breeze to use and trims even very slim strips of paper. After a few months' use it seems well made and durable, but time will tell.

The clear knob containing the actual blade comes off and is difficult to put back on. If you cut more than 5heets of paper it won't cut all the way through. I purchased it because it hurts my hands to cut (wrist tendenitis and carpul tunnel syndrome) and didn't realize how heavy it was to pick up with one hand.

This product is OK. What I don't like about it is that I can't cut more than 2 sheets of cardstock at one time. I don't think it's the cutters' fault. I think I should have purchased the heavy duty version.
I DO like that it's lightweight. I've only had it a few weeks but it does seem pretty durable.

I love this rotary cutter. It's durable, easy to read the measurements, easy to cut. But it's most useful if you purchase the extra blades which are not as cheap nor as diverse as I'd hoped. I'd like more than just the few decorative edge blades than are currently offered.

it's easier to make cuts where you want them and to line your stock up with the blade. I don't have to have a 'place' for it. I can store it easily, grab it and take it to the kitchen or where ever is most convenient. It's really light weight and just so handy! It may not last forever like a 'big blade' paper cutter and the blades have to be replaced when they get dull, but it's so much nicer to use that it's worth all that.

On the cutting board there are places for certain size sheets. If you are cutting anything that is not on there it is hard to get it just right. You think that it cuts right down the side of the plastic guide but it is about 1/16" from the edge. So if you are trying to cut something that has a colored border it will leave a small edge of the diffrent colored border. But if it doesn't have to be just right this product should work well for you.

Bottom Line:

I bought this exclusively to cut photos. It cuts, and it cuts straight, but poorly. Of course I am used to using "real" rotary trimmers (in the $200+ range). The problem with all of these economy trimmers is the use of a mat to cut against. As the paper is sheared by the blade, it is crushed into the mat causing frayed/tathered edges. This will do OK for very casual use, but for high quality clean professional results look for a true professional trimmer (Rotatrim to name one). Bottom line: I'll keep it and use ocassionally as a good trimmer is currently out of my price range, but honestly for a cleaner cut in this price range, you are better off with a conventional (lever arm) paper cutter.

I really like this product alot, I use it alot, sometimes I have to cut the line again for strightness, and accurateness but it does well, for not being the old heavy cutters we had in school, I think the strightness depends how good you place the paper.

I used this for an insert in a business mailing. It worked GREAT, but would be better for scrapbooking or smaller jobs.

This unit is amazing. You can purchase 8 1/2 x 11 paper for your pictures you print at home and save money. You will print 3-up (4 x 6 sz pictures) and use this unit to cut them apart. I suggest only doing 2 - 3 sheets at a time because more than that and the picture paper may slide a little bit and your cut will be crooked.
