It's quite large and heavy but that's because of the outlets able to use and the extra battery for backup.

There's just enough juice in this thing to let you finish what you're doing and execute a proper shutdown. That's all I really ask of my power backup, so this little unit delivers. Practically speaking, you'll get 5 to 10 minutes of power for a desktop computer, external hard drive, LCD monitor and printer. In my case, it protected me from multiple short outages and flickers, and these are the real annoyances. It will also do a good job of saving your hard drives from brown outs, which are more destructive than surges. Should last 5 years in regular use... or one really good jolt.

I have been a fan of APC products for many years, and currently have 3 APC Battery Backup/UPS products powering equipment on our home network. There are between 6-12+ power outages/drops per year where we live. As a matter of fact, there was one just this morning. The APC PowerChute software does a great job automatically shutting down our main PC during the battery backup's operating window. Over the years I have owned about 6+ APC units because they reliably protect our equipment. The current unit was purchased as a gift.

I got this product because it had a deal going on and I thought it would be nice to have a surge protector that also acted like a UPS when something happened.

The first thing I noticed is that this is thing is quite large, but that was probably expected for a UPS. The plugs are really close together and I couldn't get about 3 of my electronics to fit on it because they had the horizontal or wider plugs, and 8 plugs wasn't enough. I did a few test runs by pulling the cord and the UPS does work, but it only keeps my monitor, mouse, and cable modem on for about 10 seconds until it dies out.

We are an IT service firm specializing in small business. We have installed 50-100 of these over the last several years and found that they generally work well and provide good value for the money. It's important to configure runtimes correctly since the defaults aren't always optimal.

I noted "battery cost" as a con but it's not really that the batteries are too expensive but rather that the device is inexpensive enough that we usually just replace the whole thing when the battery fails.

All batteries do wear out eventually and since these are designed to "take the bullet" for your computer they do get fried sometimes so we've replaced a few. But based on our sample, these are good value and we'll continue to use them.

I've had this unit a bit over a year, and it started getting weird a few months ago. When the power even flickers, the UPS goes into some kind of cycle where it starts the computer/alarms/powers down and starts over again about every 2-3 seconds. That CAN'T be good for the computer! I have to reset it by unplugging the UPS and everything plugged into it, then waiting several minutes before setting up again. Inconvenient, and I have little confidence that it's protecting my equipment. I'll replace it with some other model.

Personal
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This is the third APC unit I have purchased. I bought the first one about 2 years ago, and then 2 more about 15 months ago. The first one made an awful hiss that drove me crazy, but they said it was not a defect. Then now one of the second ones (this model i'm reviewing) started clicking over and over and over, and my computer kept shutting off when hooked up. The battery was checked and was fine (i switched it with the other unit I had). Even with the other batttery it clicked and clicked and would lose power. Not a good APC experience to have to replace them every year.

In our area the eletric often goes out for a short period of time. When we learned about the battery back surgeplug we purchased one immediately. I am so glad we did. Before we got the battery back up my last computer's hard drive was fried from the electric going off and on. I was not at home to unplug the computer and I lost everything in my hard drive. I am very thankful for my friend to inform us of this product, and now I would not be without one.

We have bought 6 so far for our small business in the past year and a half. Two failed after less than a year. Two more never even worked from the purchase date. [...] replaced with two new ones, hopes that they continute to perform for more than just a year.

Dell would have charged me over [$]for higher model, not needed. This was reasonable for what it does. I wished it had an in an out for cable internet port, APC charges an extra [$]or so for just that feature.
