Nice laptop for a fair price.
By Bud from West Virginia on 5/15/2008
Pros:

Cons:
Battery life too short, Poor button placement
Best Uses:
Internet use, Word Processing
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

I am a casual user and for the money this is a good buy. My only real complaints are: that I can't find a battery with a longer run time than 2.5 hours, which comes pretty quick; and there is a button on the left side to disconnect you from the Internet that can be hit easily where it is located. I'm not real sure why you need it and I accidently hit it and have gotten disconnected as a result. I did a lot of shopping and found this model to be a good buy and that Acer is generating a good reputation.

I feel bad for you son, but I got 99 problems and my acer ain't one.
I've purchased two of these now, one for me as a travel laptop (I'm not taking my $2500 on the train with me) and one for my technologically impaired mother.
If you're expecting a top of the line computer for $450, you're a moron. If you're having wifi troubles, it's an easy fix and clearly you don't know what you're doing. Call up your ISP and have them take you through the baby steps.
You get what you pay for.

This laptop came with Vista Home Premium. I have a wireless network with 4 computers on it, which are running XP. I never could get the laptop to converse with the other machines.
That's too bad because I ended up taking the laptop back for a refund.
I really liked the laptop (nice machine, good price), and wished I could have opted for XP on it, but just got too fustrated with the OS.

This computer was purchased at a great price. The money I saved I invested in adding ram with EasyTech installing it for me. It turned this slightly slow laptop into a little sports car... I don't know why people complain about vista, I find it's features as sexy as a mac and at least I can get programs for it. The only issues I have is the wireless lan button is on the left side is sometimes accidently hit by my hand when I'm typing and I shut off the internet. No big deal. The screen is crystal clear (acer's makes good monitors) It was worth the money and with the money saved I bought the Service plan wireless mouse, flash drive, ram, install, some software and I still came out cheaper than HP or dell

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

I actually am really pleased with this laptop. The responsiveness of the keyboard, the speed of the processor, the clarity of the screen are serious pluses. The only minus is the refresh rate of the video that makes is choppy and freezes while playing games (the specs say 128-252MB shared memory, but the BIOS says 8!), and the touchpad is too touchy, and it sticks on places you don't want.
Windows Vista is slightly problematic. The Premium edition is the way to go, but I found that there are compatibility issues with other software. When I run basically 100% Microsoft software (Office 2003, IE7) there are no problems. However, Firefox has very poor performance and locks up. I found other 3rd party programs that would install then lock up immediately after starting. This is a Microsoft, not an Acer, problem though.
On the other plus side for those interested, I have successfully run Ubuntu 7.10 on this laptop, and it recognized the video, sound, touchpad, and wired networking. It did not recognize the wireless adapter, but I did not attempt to get it recognized either.
Overall, this is a very high quality laptop for the money.

Vista is ponderous.
I installed Mepis Linux to boot by default; now it's fast, and does everything I ask.
Plenty of speed and storage for regular use; I'm not a "gamer". If you want a great laptop for regular computing tasks, I'd recommend this one.
I don't know why anyone would want Vista.

I really like this laptop! The only thing I think it could use is a wireless mouse for easirer navigation. THIS IS NOT A LAPTOP FOR AVID GAMERS!!! Of course an avid gamer would know this and would also know you would need to shell out a lot more [$]to have a true gaming experience. This laptop is not heavy, to me it is like your traditional laptop. It's stays cool and quiet. The laptop is easy to set up and instantly connects with your home router. The screen is a nice size, not too big or too small. The color graphics are beautiful. If you don't have a laundry list of items that you need in a laptop then this one is for you. If you have a list of requirements, then you obviously need to spend more money.
