Scanning software is bad. Bundled software is too old. There are 3 modes (a) Full Auto (b) Home (c) Pro. I spend a lot of time changing options, scanned and compared the results. IMO (a) Full auto scanning work well, options are limited. The program ends after each scan so you have to restart it, waste a lot of time. Developers should be a little smarter. (b) Home, similar to Pro but fewer options. (c) Pro shows a little more details in scan. White comes out grayish. It scans the entire scanner glass surface, you can't set it to scan only the photo. Inconsistency scanning in all 3 modes, more in the Pro mode. Examples: I scan and view the image, small area around the eye is missing, I rescan (w/o changing anything) it's complete. Sometimes you get more details in Auto mode, other times you get more details in Pro mode. I scan once in Auto and once in Pro mode, then select the better of the two - real time wasting. Overall, I am not impress. My current HP ScanJet 4C & software impresses me more than the Epson 4490. The 4490 is going back, I may try the HP G4050 and see how it compares to this one, or stay with the 4C.
