I'm using it with an old Dell system, which has a P3 processor and a 20GB hard drive, which was full. Instead of buying a new system or replacing the hard drive in the existing one I installed this external hard drive and transfered most of my files onto it. It took 15 minutes and [$] and I can keep using my PC including saving music, pictures, videos and backups.
Love it! Love it! Love it!

Had a few minor problems with setup, but since then no problems. It is a little slow when you swap between computers (we have Mac and PC, so the drive gets unplugged and replugged frequently), but once it has gotten itself situated the file transfers are nice and quick.

This is a great drive at a good price. While it doesn't have multiple I/O selections ( Firewiree 400/800, eSATA), it does have USB2 which allows it to operate as a great back-up drive, extra storage drive, or an addition to a drive server.I bought this to use as a back-up to my hard drive and to store extra files. I plan on attaching this to the new HP Home Server when it goes on sale, as extra storage space.[...]. If you are thinking about saving a few dollars to get a smaller drive, I would recommend that you save a little more and get at least a 500gig drive.

I originally wanted to buy this product, but the store and my region as well as [@] was out of stock. I was given a substitute brand called Maxtor and I had problems with that from the moment I plugged it in. It had come to me with a virus and I had difficulty opening it up to access what I had downloaded onto it. This WD product is like a dream come true especially for someone like me who doesn't know how to work with computers very well. It was very easy to install and is very easy to find what I am looking for.

I have a media center pc with tv recording and have so many shows I keep, I quickly ran out of room on my hard drive. I now have 2 of these and can watch shows any time I want and more room on my regular hard drive, the transfer rate is slow, only on media center pc's as the mfg comments on. You need to reformat the units hard drive to be able to save large files. do this before you transfer any files.

Backed up my entire hard drive just in time. About 3 months after buying this Huge hard drive my internal hard drive crashes on me. All I had to do was replace the broken hard drive and retransfer all the old files from the Western Digital 500gb. Nothing was lost!!! Another Great feature is this hard drive shuts itself off whenever I shut my laptop off! This is great as it dosent consume any extra energy when it is least needed; when the computer is self is offline. I only point this out because before this hard drive I had 160gb external drive that was not only loud, but had to be turned off manuely every time. I now this dosent sound like a big deal, but with the on/off swith at a very inconvinient place this became a huge burden quick!! So 5 ***** to my new Western Digital Drive. Strongly recommend it to anyone!

My video files could not be transfered with the current format of the drive since they were over 4 GB. I had to reformat the drive to a different file system (NTFS, I think), which took over an hour. After that was done, it still didn't work. I got error messages saying the disk was full, when I had lass than 20 GB on a 500 GB drive. I contacted WD Tech Support, and after three days of FAQ's and lack of response to my e-mail, I finally brought the piece of junk back [...]. They were nice enough to make it an even swap for a Maxtor 500 GB that I plugged in, and started copying files to right out of the box. No error messages, no formatting, no problems! My old USB drive was 120 GB Maxtor that worked perfectly for years, so I should have stayed with that. Now I know! If you want a drive to USE, not tinker with, get the Maxtor. Yes, I have an adequate machine with adequate RAM, BIOS updates and all that running XP, and everything else works fine. The problem was definitely the drive.

This kind of reminds me of macs, or why I don't buy them. These don't come up with ANY sort of control buttons/switches or whatever! that means, the only way to control it is to plug it into the pc or removing it, or plug/unplug the power cable. both of which should not be done all that often. The transfer speed is not that fast for USB2.0, and the spin-up time is around 5-10 seconds, which could be annoying at times. I guess the average user would find this to be extremely easy to use. But for the more advanced users I think you will find the lack of control and the semi-flimsy construction quite frustrating. also, this seems to be a ATAPI drive inside using 66 or 100MB. for the more technically inclined I would recommend instead of this to spend a bit more money to get a 500GB sata2 and an enclosure instead, much better performance and reliability that way.

At first I thought I was getting a dud. The drive comes from the factory set to FAT32 format. With my NTSF windows setup, like most, this drive was transferring at VERY SLOW speeds. However, after going in and reformatting it to NTSF I have had nothing but FAST speeds via USB 2.0 and LOVE this drive!

The only drawback:
Video files run normally more then 4GB. Since its a FAT file system (instead of NTFS), it will not allow you to have a single file of more then 4GB size. So you have to split the video upload into multiple chunks.
