Drive Failed After 3 Months!!

Cons:
Data Lost, Drive Failed
Best Uses:
Doorstop, Paperweight
Describe Yourself:
Power user
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
The drive just stopped working one day. It would spin up and the light was on solid but the OS and BIOS would no longer recognize it or assign it a drive letter. All the data I had backed up on it was lost. [...] I did not choose to RMA it as I voided the warranty by opening the case. I tried hooking up the internal drive to the motherboard but no luck with that either. I have read many other negative comments about this product at other sites. Beware!

Very easy to set up. Lots of space. Easy to use. I was running out of space on hard drive, it began showing signs of end of drive use & possible crashing. I transfered my files to the new Maxtor drive, deleted the files from laptop to create more space. It corrected the issues. Now I feel better knowing my files are safe. Could be smaller.

For the Staples price, the Maxtor 500GB has the greatest capacity. My husband and I compared prices. It was easy to set up, and it takes up little space. Now I feel reassured that my personal documents and my music will be safe! Our harddrive "crashed" last 01/08. Now I feel that all's secure.

IF you have important data on ONE computer you MUST have one of these back up drives and configure it to save your entire C:\ drive EVERY night at 12:01 AM. The week after we put this thing into service we had a difficulty with one computer that would have lost months and months of input data had we not had the ability to recover it...what timing!!

1. I used the system as a backup for my computer files. While it did back up the files - it also corrupted my computer (repeated crashes) - resulting in the required re-installation of a new operating system on my three month old computer.....Terrible terrible experience.
2. Never shuts off - should be an on/off switch.

Works great. Case not very good. Has very bright white light in front that I had to cover up with a piece of tape. White light also showed up the crack where the case was put together which went half way up the front. I also have Western Digital and home built external drives. Would recommend the Western Digital.

Not sure why Staples offered this item at such a great price, I bought 2, one for a gift. I think I got a great deal. Drive is very easy to setup. I'm not using the installed software because I just like to drop and drag and it's great for that as well. So far so good, and it's FAST. The one touch feature is superb if you want to use the installed software. Wish it was a little compact, it's the size of a modem, but I can live with it. I'm most impressesd on the speed (7200 on this unit). I still do a burn disk backup because you can never be too safe relying on one means of storage. Very highly recommend this model.

I use hd's to store lots of video. This drive is fine, except for the tiny USB "mini B" socket. This connector is for phones, not tabletop hard drives. It's small and has poor grip, plus the alignment of the socket inside the plastic case is "approximate". Casual relocation of the hard drive on a tabletop can disconnect the cable plug. Not a deal breaker, but it is annoying.

I've been using these drives for a while. This was my second 500GB drive and is currently backing up my iMac (OS 10.4) and also a working drive for my video files. I cross-backup data from this drive to the dedicated 500GB Maxtor external on my XP system to ensure no loss of video or photos.
Kudos to Maxtor for being "green" for not including extra media for the backup s/w. Beware if you are a Mac owner and want to use their backup s/w, it must be copied off the drive before you reformat the drive for use with Mac OS.
Maxtor does document this - but you have to read the docs. :-) Classic RTFM if you are a Mac owner.

Easy to set up, works great thus far. Only problem we have with it is the continually flashing light. Could be we've missed a way to turn it off but none of us were able to figure out a way. We had to place it facing the wall in an area where we wouldn't see the light. Aside from that, we've been pleased. However, the light is bright and continual so when we need another external hard drive, we'll be looking at other products that hopefully don't flash us all the time.

My Windows Vista Home Premium came with a too small D-drive to actaully backup my system and files (how well designed is that?). So I made the leap to an external hard drive and found this was the lowest cost per GB for hard drive with the sale price at Staples. Online, I saw high ratings for Seagate drives (subsidiary of Maxtor) and have nothing but good things to say about the drive. It has fast transfer speed (high RPM) and good pricing. It worked seamlessly with my computer(s) that used different operating system (so it works like a "plug and play" unit for any operating system that works with plug & play accessories). I use the Maxtor Manager software (which gets put on your desktop automatically). You can easily set up automated backups for several different computers or for a system disk using this drive. Just beware, the backup format is for the files to be protected as "read only". If you needed to restore the files may get restored as "read only" until you change that format (?). However, if you suffered a catastrophic failure you might just be glad to get your system restored at all! With 500 GB this drive is great for people who want to store big files like multimedia/movies, etc. I have not tried to do a full system restore - but did verify the files backed are readable, etc. I'm happy with the Maxtor and would buy it again.

This ext. HD (hard drive) is easy to use and set up. Aside from a pesky registration form there is little that will upset you about it. I mainly use this for storing files and folders that I no longer need on my computer as well as videos and music. A rather brilliant design is a push button light on the front of the device that will instantly back up your predesignated files or default file folders. It is also quiet and does not take up much desk space. The only downside is that it is not very small or compact for travel. It is instead rather bulky if placed in tight spaces for travel. Otherwise it is a highly recommended ext. HD.
Great Drive - Great Value
