Product loses satellites easily and often fails to find satellites despite unobstructed view of a clear sky. Product updates so position slowly that turn instructions come too late.

Good First GPS
By Pet TransporterVerified Purchaser from Litchfield, Maine on 8/20/2008

Pros:
Acquires Satellites Quickly, Compact, Easy Menus, Easy To Set Up
Cons:
No shortest route
Best Uses:
Finding Specific Address
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is our first GPS. I didn't think I would use it often since my travels are well known routes, but I've been surprised as to how much I dig it out to direct me. I love the voice feature since I prefer to keep my eyes on the road when driving. I don't like the fact that it tends to lead you to your destination via highways when there are shorter routes available. This would help in gas.

I have never used GPS before. I have been totally impressed with the 260 after doing a fair amount of research and using it for several weeks. I spent several days trying to fool it, by taking wrong turns. It is quick to respond to a missed turn, but will always get you back on course quickly. I played with the unit in places I knew. It didn`t always take me to the best route, but always got me where I needed to go.

We just got back from a road trip between Pennsylvania and Colorado. I found the product most useful in finding things like gas stations, food, movie theaters and [...]. When you do not know the area and you need something it can tell you exactly where to go. If you travel in places that you are not familiar this is a great tool.

Excellent unit. I have never owed a GPS unit previous to this one. I'm glad I chose the Garmin Nuvi 260. I had a good understanding of the functions in a short time, without looking at the instructions. It's accurate and reroutes very fast. There are other Garmin's which offer Bluetooth and other non navigational functions. I was very impressed with the number of points of interests,(restaurants / hotels, ect..) You will not be disappointed with this unit....

This product works just like it's advertised. It acquires satellites quickly and responds quickly. It is amazing how accurately it shows your position and delivers you right in front of where you are navigating to. I could quibble with some of it's choices for routes but I won't. The online manual that you can download is only a copy of what you get in the box and is lacking depth. This isn't that important since the unit is pretty simple to figure out.

Great graphics, good unline updates. Car, pedestrian, and bicycle modes make it interesting. The naming of streets well before turning is a great feature. By unusual routes I mean routes are not always the most practical although they may be the shortest. On one of my trips, I wanted to go up to SLO and the Garmin had me take a "shortcut" on a winding mountain road in the Santa Barbara area, that while may be shorter, leaving the main interstate onto a two-lane road didn't make any sense. On long trips I find that I can plan a route more of my liking if I put via stops in ahead of leaving home so that I can stay closer to the route and site I want to see after perusing a map. It is also interesting because with the map running without a destination designated, such as around my community, makes me better acquainted with the area along my route.

I never really write reviews so this is totally out of character for me. But after about 2 weeks with this 260 I had to come back to the web site and write a review. I bought this for my wife and I just because we travel quite a bit and I find it kind of stressful at times. Never again! This thing takes the stress out of not knowing where you are going. You know, when you are in a strange town and your Map Quest directions are kind of confusing because you don’t really know the streets.. Well like said, this totally takes the stress out of it. If you make a wrong turn, within seconds it says “re-calculating” and then it gives you the new instruction. Really that simple! Setting it up is as easy as turning it on. It finds the satellites within seconds and off you go. Get the “text to speech” mode. Instead of saying “in 500 feet turn left” it says “In 500 feet turn left on Main Street”. I find that extremely helpful. No confusion as to what street they are talking about. I was using it in seconds. It’s really that simple. Needless to say love this little 260 and will never travel without it again. Hope this helps you decide.

Cons:
Inaccurate
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This is my first GPS unit, so I can’t compare it to others. While it works reasonably well and the unit is VERY simple to use, the directions are not always accurate; the voice instructions may completely skip a step (a turn onto the next street) depending on the route. The saving grace is at least the ‘highlighted route’ picture is right, but that does defeats some of the purpose if you have to stare at the unit to know which way to go.

Overall, the directions are not of a “Internet quality” (which typically isn't dead on to begin with), but it certainly is more convenient than just having a print-out to find someplace.

I checked quite a few GPS'S out and could not be happier then I am with the Garmen 260. My brother in law just bought one after trying mine. His old one was a megillon.I strongly recommend this unit.

This is my second GPS and it is a huge improvement. The spoken directions are wonderful. It tells you how far away your next turn is and the name of the road or exit you are to take. I love it and would recommend it.

Easiest GPS to use, simply 2 buttons on start screen, just choose map of find address. Extremely easy to start up right out of box, took only 10 seconds to mount and get started. Extremely small and easy to take with you anywhere.
BUT... I returned it after 2 weeks because if you dont have the exact address forget trying to find it through the name. It took 5 minutes to pull up names and often did not have the correct ones.
