There are no maps available to download/upgrade the existing ones. The searches most often turn up nothing, and it can't seem to find the locations I'm looking for unless I input the address. It's not as easy to use as a lot of other GPS'. It tries to take me down streets that do not exist or do not go thru.

Good Basic GPS

Describe Yourself:
Frequent Traveler, Gearhead, Good With Directions
How long have you owned it:
A month or less
Primary use:
Personal
Pros:
Acquires Satellites Quickly, Compact, Easy detour, Nice visual interface, Reliable Performance
Cons:
Cannot add stops to trip, Difficult Menus, Hard to get onoff mount, Maps not current
Best Uses:
Finding Specific Address
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This was my second GPS and it didn't have the features I liked and was used to with my old GPS, so i gave it to my parents. Since it is there first GPS they love it. It is very basic so if you already use GPS you may want a higher model. The best feature is when on the highway a detour icon shows up if you start to slow down. You just touch the icon and it asks how much you want to detour. I found the POI database very limited and in some cases inaccurate, it didn't even list libraries.

We have used this 4 times since Christmas. Never had to pull out a manual yet. All the features are self-explanatory. The only drawbacks we have seen is that sometimes it does not clearly show which fork to take when doing in town driving. Most of the time it gives very explicit, clear and easy to follow directions. We found it much more useful than a Trip-Tik or Yahoo map driving directions.

For the price, it can't be beat! I used it to drive from NYC to Atlanta and then on to Arizona. It directed me to all my planned hotels along the way without a hitch. I programmed in store addresses in Tucson, and was able to get from one to another in the shortest time. It only has a problem in brand new (less than 1 year) home developments where the new streets are not included in its map data, other than that, this gadget's the best! (I would follow its voice anywhere!)

Frequent Traveler, Technically Challenged
How long have you owned it:

Primary use:
Personal
Pros:
Acquires Satellites Quickly, Compact, Easy Menus, Easy To Read, Easy To Set Up, Reliable Performance, Simple Controls
Cons:
No names of streets
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am not sorry I bought this for my daughter as a gift, because the sale price was substantially below normal retail. It does most everything well or superior to other models, except that street names are not announced (you have to look at the screen while driving), which feature you can have on other brand names at the same sale price. But as for information and use, it is equal to or more accurate and current than the other three models from different manufacturers I purchased this year as gifts. In my personal view, it is much better than the comparable Tom Tom, but less overall than the Nextar and Omnitech.

It mapped well as long as it already had the cities or streets in it. It didn't recognize my zip code and put my street address in an entirely different city. Other than that, for major routes it got me where I needed to go. I'm still playing with it and learning and it is a good entry level GPS.

This would be a great GPS if it had current maps. I could not find major stores and major roads. I went on a major highway in Orlando and the Magellan Maestro 3100 showed me driving through a field. I called customer support to find out if there were any current maps, and was told no, but I could wait to see if there were any updated maps coming out for this model. I returned the item the same day.

Best Uses:
Faster Routes, Finding Specific Address
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The Magellarn Maestro 3100 does everything I need. Once I understood the address features, I found it easy to save addresses. New in FL - great for learning distances to local destinations. It was incredible for my move south from the upper midwest - just me and the cat (and no maps) driving a truck towing my car - made the move a cinch!Do I wish display could reset to main map with a single tap? Yes. Would it be nice if the dimmer (day to night) was one button? Of course. If it had a "learn" feature, would life be perfect? Probably. But then the 3100 might not be available for under [$], and that's really a big part of "justifying" my new toy/co-pilot/friend.P.S. - Get an FM transmitter for use through the car speakers in noisy vehicles (truck) - works even better. Happy motoring!

BEST PORTABLE GPS FOR THE MONEY
By SEASONED TRAVELER from NASHVILLE, TN on 9/10/2007
Pros:
Accurate Maps, Easy Controls, Easy To Follow Directions, Nice Visual Interface
Cons:
LATE PROMPTS
Best Uses:
Highway Driving, Rural Driving
Describe Yourself:
Practical
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I USE IT FOR LONG DISTANCE TRAVEL AS WELL AS LOCAL DRIVING TO DIFFERENT POINTS OF INTEREST. IT IS RELIABLE AND EASY TO USE. MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS THAT THE PROMPTS FOR TURNS SOMETIMES COME TOO CLOSE TO THE ACTUAL POSITION AND I HAVE TO SLAM ON MY BRAKES TO MAKE THE TURN. YOU STILL HAVE TO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE DISPLAY MAP
