I have this on my kitchen counter to control incoming mail clutter. It was an essential part of my routine. And then one day, it just DIED. No power - no shred. So, I'm back to get another!
I bought the first one in December of 07. Did not use it all that much, then it started running all the time, instead of only when you put something in to shred. It overheated way too quickly doing that. I took it back, got another one. Since the warranty covers only one incident, I had to buy a 3 year warranty for $7.99 which wasn't a bad price, actually. This second one would shut off when I put anything off... umm.. kind of the opposite of what it was supposed to do. Took it back right away, and was given another one. I'm going to open up this one and see if it works ok. It does chew up 10 pages at a time, I can throw in unopened junk mail without worrying what's in it, and it will chew them up just fine, as long as the thing is working. I sure hope I get a good one this time. The bin filled up quickly, but I guess that's the tradeoff in getting a compact one that will fit on a shelf.
They don't last. I've replaced two of them in the last year. They simply stop working for no apparent reason.
I feel better about shredding my confidential papers

stops functioning for no particular reason;
overheats quickly;
returned the item 3 times, before resulting to buy another brand;
Many people had similar experience with the product according to comments from Store personnel/other customers. Do not buy!
Stop working after 6 mos with very little use.
Works great, well built; on the verge of Heavy Duty. Would be nice if it took full size sheets, but for price vs. performance, a very good buy for home use.
I love shredding my junk mail. Unlike most small shredders you can shred each envelop without having to open it. And credit cards are a snap!
It's the best home shredder on the market.
I got this shredder and used it for about 1 year or less and it stopped working. I just get the usual amount of junk mail and shred it. I don't know why I had to put 1 star. It deserves no stars.
Love the "peace of mind" I get from shredding unsolicited credit card offers, old bills, etc. Adds a level of security to today's world of identity theft
The thing has busted twice and we've had it less than a year (I believe mother board burnt out). [...] Not doing it again -- going with a different brand.

I use it mainly for junk mail and personal shredding. Even tho it is small it is capable of shredding 10 folded sheets of paper. I like the fact that it is compact and sits on top of my desk so it is handy.
The drawbacks are, this is the third one that I have had since April. The first one just stopped working, the second one was so noisy I thought it was shredding glass, the third one seems to be working fine so far.
The other problem is at times the bin does not go back into the case easily and if you don't get it lined up just right it will not work
(Discovered that if you tip the bin slightly while sliding it in you can easily by-pass the little slot and it slides in fine.)
But it does shred very well if you get one that works right. I'm hoping that the third time is the charm. Would not use in an office setting, more for home use.
The product was easy to use, but broke after 10 light usages. Light comes on, but shredder never starts. No jam, no overheat - just stopped.
not good for long time use ......?
at home
I am irritated. I thought that when I was getting this that it would be the last shredder I would ever have to get. I liked the fact you could put it on top of a counter instead of having to bend over to use it (would be easy on my back.) Just another piece of junk!!!
To destroy private information. Protect me from identity theft
Hardly used the shredder at all. Stopped working.I am really disappointed with Staples. So many people have complained about this shredder. Save yourselves and don't buy this.I got a red flag, when I had to push power button 2-times to start. I think a fuse is blown,I can not change.Fuse should be user friendly.
used this for daily junk mail. Was shredding today and after emptying it, it iwll not turn back on. Very frustrating. Paid a lot of money for this and now it has to be trashed.

I love this shredder. It is a good size, and is durable and easy to use. I like it mostly because I can take my junk mail and slip it right into the shredder. It doesn't take up much room, and doesn't take up much power, though it is very powerful.

mostly shredding confindential information from junk mail. Got 2 of this die on me already. We only use it lightly and not even any thickness. the shredder just stops working and would not turn on.
Call the warranty department within the warranty period, you have to pay the shipment to ship to them.
You can buy better shredders at this price.

We went through 3 of these. I bought the first one it quit working with in a day, returned it for the second it quit with in about 4 hours, and the third I only got 1 sheet down it before it quit. It was not continous use either. Just shredding here and there. The overheated light never came on on any of the 3. I loved the size and function ease of the buttons. But this product has some serious malfunctions.
Very useful product. Just what I was looking for.
I bought it new January 31, 2008. I have gently used this for seven months. It never jammed once. I never overloaded. I kept it cleaned and maintained well. It has died on me just like that. Yes, I checked the switch in back,
NOT RELIABLE. I HAVE REPLACED OTHER SET.

I love that I can shred junk mail without having to open it. Time saver.
Unfortunately, this product was broken before 6 months.
[...]all 4 times. I have had this shredder die within 6 sheets of paper. It has been replaced every time without questioning, but I do not think it is very durable.
I purchased this to use in my private office for shredding confidential documents and sensitive junk mail. I wanted something that was fairly small in size and unobtrusive. It sounded like the shredder was fairly powerful, the product info says it will shred 10-folded sheets, CDs, and DVDs. Also stated to have "Ferocious shredding power". Oh yeah.
I've never got this to shred more than 5 or 6 folded sheets without jamming, or on the few occasions when not jamming, overworking with a hard labored noise. It's billed as a junk mail shredder, well forget about shredding unopened junk mails such as credit card solicitations, it won't handle it. CD's and DVD's are also a sure jam that has to be worked out by reversing and refeeding several times. I guess they forgot to include the ferocious shredding power when they made my shredder. I won't buy another one and wouldn't recommend it to others.
It arrived in a good condition, but it died after 4 weeks of use. I emailed staples customer service, and they replied saying that you have to contact Warranty & repair by phone on WEEK DAYS 9am to 5pm ONLY. After I managed to contact them, they gave me a case number and said that somebody would contact me. Even after 3 weeks I didn't receive any response, so I decided to call them again. Finaly, somebody contacted me from repair and asked me to ship this shredder for repair.
Now I have to pay for shipping more than I bought this item for.
Staples sucks on customer service.

Staples sucks on customer service.
I like that it can shred credit cards.
This compact little shredder is out of the way, but has a lot of power. It easily handles all our junk mail, which unfortuneately is quick a lot.
Compact shredder fits just about anywhere. Efficient for standard mail stuff. Bin holds more than expected. Very pleased, definitely worth the price.
The size and bin make it very convenient to use.
I use it to shred junk mail. It has eliminated a pile up.
It's easy to use for everyday usage.
Died (could not get it to turn on) one year 3 days after I bought it for no reason, only used product for personal use so it wasn't overworked at all!!! [...]
it does the job i bought it for.
Like everything I've bought from Staples this broke down within a couple of months. It was used very little, just for the home but stopped working after 3 months. This was the second shredder that quit after a short period and the last purchase I'll be making at Staples.
I read most of the reviews on Staples website so was eager to puchase this product to get rid of the piles of junk mail and confidential papers that have been piling up in my house.
So after purchasing this item and getting it home, I opened the box, plugged the machine in, and shreaded 4 single papers and then tried a junk mail envelope before the machine broke. I tried to shread a junk mail envelope which had 3 papers folded up inside. (Which according to the product specifications this product should be powerful enough to do so.) Needless to say the machine jamed and could not perform this task. I had to hit the reverse button and still yank on the paper to get it out of the machine. (The reverse mechinism that the machine has built in didn't do the job of freeing the envelope and spitting it back out.) Then it no longer would let me feed any papers into it at all. I read the instructions to make sure that any bits of paper were clear from it and also let it stand for 2 hours. (The instructions says if this problem occures after a jam to let it wait 1/2 an hour and try again.) The machine never bounced back from this jam and I was forced to take it back to Staples. I'm going to try another brand shreader this time because I am no longer confident that this machine performs up to its expectations.
to shred mail with name address and bills paid via computer
I have two at home and two at work and love the desk top size.
GREAT FOR THE PRICE
Great little shredder works well
NOT RELIABLE!
compact & strong for most shredding jobs, Easy to find a corner for it dtsnding !
Shred personal papers.
We needed a small shredder for personal documents to prevent identity theft.
This is good for low volume work. Not sure how it will stand the test of time. For my purposes it is just fine and was good value for the buck[$]
This product has worked well each time I have used it. I like how easy it is to empty.
The cube shape is a plus because it prevents the unit from accidently being tipped over if it's not on shelf. The curved paper slot allows for papers to be inserted for shredding so the unit can be placed on shelf with limited head room.
We are on our second shredder - thankfully we bought the service plan! We are already having problems with this replacement shredder not working consistently. Our best investment was the extended service plan.
Use it daily for junk and confidential mail..... keep it right by my easy chair...

I had read some comments regarding various cons about this product, so I was a little apprehensive to purchase it, but I would have to say that I am satisified with the purchase.
It does exactly what I bought it for, shredding mail. Now, maybe I don't get as much mail as others because I have requested not to have unsolicted credit offers sent to me, but I do still get a fair amount. This product has NO PROBLEMS with my everyday mail, and I would suspect none with the average HOME user.
Also, I bought it specifically because if it's ability to shred CDs and credit cards. It has no problem tearing through those.
As for the small bin size, that's what you get with a compact shredder. You have to make a decision, do you want a big and bulky unit, or a small unit? Of course, when you make the decision to a compact unit, the thing you sacrifice is bin size. So, I say it is an adequate bin size (for the model). And as a bonus, it fits right in the spot I had picked out for it.
Is it the quietest? Of course not. But, I got what I paid for, and I am very happy with it.
Is it a little messy when you empty it? Sure it is! Find me a compact bagless shredder that isn't?
Lasted about 10 sheets of paper before is malfunctioned. In this case I actually got much less than I paid for.
I should of heeded the warning of the 10% that doesn't like the machine, but I thought how could I go wrong with 90% satisfactory? Well mine died and I hope I can return it after about 60 days.
WOW! is all I can about this shredder.
The shredder I had from the Year-One finally gave out, so I set out to shop for a new one.
I'm so glad I found this 'MailMate' shredder. And am so grateful for all the reviews about it here at Staples. They really did help me make my decision. Thanks peeps!
This wee shredder is very GOOD-LOOKING. Its small footprint fits so nicely on my desk side-table. To me, it's about equivalent to a toaster-oven standing on-end.
(There is a larger model, tho, if you want a bit of a larger basket, called the MailMate M3)
It EATS EVERYTHING. It's the JUNKMAIL KING! It eats the envelope. The contents of the envelope. The WHOLE MAGILLA! So very handy for all those horrid Credit Card and Magazine offers. And, it eats Credit Cards, CD's, DVD's, staples, and small paperclips!
(Paper, envelopes, junkmail, etc have to go in vertically tho, not horizontally)
And, boy, is it QUIET while doing so! At least, it's a heckuva lot quieter than my old shredder (which sounded like a lawn-mower, I kid you not). I hated feeding that thing. The 'MailMate' is whisper-quiet compared to it.
The BASKET is fabulous! I had to take the whole top off my old shredder to empty it. Not the 'MailMate' tho. Just slide the basket out, empty it, and slide it back in. Voila! What ease.
(Empty it often; you really don't want it stuffed to the gills, as that WILL cause jams)
Did I mention the PRICE? I don't know how Staples did it, but they did! Kudos to them for creating a MONSTER shredder at a VERY AFFORDABLE price.
I don't know what I like best about this shredder because I LOVE absolutely every feature it has! It's the closest thing to 'perfect' that I've ever been able to say about an electronic product.
P.S. Please be sure to get the Staples Shredder Oil (#602399) or Lubricating Sheets (#602400), (as recommended in the Operating Pamphlet), when you purchase this shredder; it really WILL keep it in top-notch condition.
use it everyday. cards will jam at times but overall it is great. Best one I have ever had
Works pretty darn good.
This is a decent shredder for t
