1.5V Batteries

There are two major types of 1.5V batteries: cylindrical AA-type cells and coin batteries. These are available in different capacities and offer varying discharge rates. Batteries with a nominal voltage rating of 1.5 volts are excellent for powering low and medium-drain devices like clocks, remotes, smoke alarms, and flashlights. Look to Staples® for a good selection of 1.5-volt power cells designed for different applications.

Power a Wide Range of Portable Electronic Devices With Cylindrical 1.5V Batteries
Cylindrical 1.5-volt cells are the most common types of primary batteries. They include AAAA, AAA, AA, N, C, and D cells. The slimmest, AAAA, power pen flashlights, active styluses, and laser pointers. This size is only available as an alkaline battery and has a capacity of 625mAh. Other sizes of cylindrical cells use alkaline and carbon-zinc cells. AA and AAA units also come as lithium batteries. While manufacturers describe carbon-zinc batteries as heavy-duty, they are the least powerful type of disposable cells. Alkaline 1.5-volt batteries have higher capacities and are better for running high-drain devices. Lithium cells can store more charge than alkaline ones and have a longer shelf life. These features make them perfect for high-drain electronics like digital cameras and low-drain infrequently used devices like smoke detectors.

Choose Between Silver Oxide and Alkaline Button-Type 1.5V Batteries
While lithium coin cells operate at 3 volts, silver oxide and alkaline coin batteries put out 1.5 volts. Shoppers can identify silver oxide units by the SR prefix in their IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) designation numbers. The alphanumeric designations for alkaline coin cells start with LR. The two types of 1.5-volt coin batteries have different discharge profiles. Voltage drops gradually when alkaline units discharge, but it remains steady for silver oxide cells until the sharp drop before they die. Choose silver oxide coin batteries for devices that require stable operating voltages. These include watches, timers, clocks, and camera light meters. You can identify those meant for watches by the SW (low drain) and W (high drain) suffixes in their IEC designations.

Are There Rechargeable 1.5V Batteries?
Yes, but they are rare. There is a brand of 1.5-volt lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. These are currently only available in AA and AAA sizes. With a lifespan of 500 recharges, a 1.5-volt lithium cell can replace hundreds of disposable alkaline and carbon-zinc batteries.

Can 1.2V Rechargeable Cylindrical Cells Replace Disposable 1.5V Batteries?
Yes. Rechargeable NiMH and NiCd batteries have a rated nominal voltage of 1.2 volts and can replace 1.5-volt alkaline cells for most devices. While an alkaline battery starts out at 1.5 volts, its voltage quickly drops to 1.0 - 1.25 volts under load. Most electronics that run on these batteries can tolerate output voltages between 0.9 and 1.5 volts. However, the 0.3-volt difference between disposable and rechargeable 1.5-volt batteries may affect performance for devices that require four or more cells. If this voltage drop affects the operation of a device, consider switching to 1.65-volt nickel-zinc rechargeable batteries.

Do Silver Oxide Coin-Type 1.5V Batteries Last Longer Than Alkaline Ones?
Yes. The maximum capacity of silver oxide batteries is double that of the most powerful alkaline coin cell. This makes them last twice as long as alkaline button cells. Silver oxide coin cells also have other advantages over alkaline varieties. They are lighter, less prone to leakage, and more resistant to corrosion, heat, and cold.
