Hand trucks offer an easy and safe way to transport both heavy goods and large quantities of light goods to their new locations. They're an essential piece of equipment for many departments, from shipping and receiving to facility maintenance. Many offer multiple configurations to choose from, meeting the needs of a range of transport applications.

Choose from different hand truck types
Among the most popular types of hand carts are two-wheeled hand carts and four-wheeled platform trucks. The former tilt back when in operation to move cargo at a slight incline, while the latter have wider platforms to accommodate larger items. Many platform trucks also feature tread on their beds, providing traction to keep cargo from slipping out of place.

Two-wheeled carts usually have larger wheels. Pneumatic wheels offer the benefit of supporting heavy loads and also rolling quietly. Platform trucks typically roll along on casters that swivel for easy steering and never require inflation.

Consider the cargo when selecting a hand cart
Hand trucks with lifting plates at the bottom are useful for sliding beneath filing cabinets to provide leverage and lifting power. Dollies and trucks made of tubular steel are a good option when moving heavier objects, while smaller, lightweight nylon carts are suitable for boxes of documents and similar items.

A longer, taller hand cart is also recommended when you're moving taller items, such as modular storage closets, since they provide the lifting power and support needed to get the job done. If you're moving different types of items, consider a convertible hand truck with multiple possible configurations.

What can you safely move with a hand truck?
Hand trucks and carts have a specific maximum weight that they can carry, so note that limit before loading up your cargo. Some support much as 1,000 pounds. Ensure that the items are not much wider than the base of the cart to maintain stability and prevent overbalancing while you're in motion. Items like filing cabinets and closets should have their doors closed and locked before being loaded so that they don't slide or swing open in transit.

Do dollies take more than one person to operate?
While most hand trucks only have a single handle for one operator, you may still want two people handling the moving in some cases. Sometimes, heavy loads require guidance on both ends to negotiate corners and obstacles. Another possibility is that tall objects obstruct the operator's view, necessitating an extra pair of eyes. There are also moving dollies that sit beneath heavy furniture or appliances, such as washing machines, so two people can push the item along.

Do hand trucks take up a lot of storage space?
A chief benefit of many hand carts is that they fold up for space-saving storage when not in use. Even utility carts, which feature built-in cases for holding their cargo, collapse to a flat size. Others feature telescoping or folding or removable handles. This allows for keeping your hand trucks beneath a table or in a storage closet without worrying about running out of room.
